They should be called the Phoenix Unicorns.....because they don't exist and they will never exist.

Phoenix will never have a professional soccer team as long as the pro season occurs during the hottest months of the year.

Ownership groups find it too much of a gamble to build an indoor, natural grass, climate controlled stadium for soccer.

So Division 1 and Division 2 soccer are out of the question.

The best Arizona will ever get will be:

    Winter exhibition matches
    US Development Academy (winter)
    MLS winter training

....or perhaps someone will start a Division 4 Inter-Arizona Winter League

How about we start talking about renaming the Arizona Sahuraros?

It is such a ridiculous name.

Might as well be called the Arizona Pricks.

Haboob AZ is a nice name, I'd root for that team.
Make it AZ Haboob so that it looks like Alkmaar sister team because Euro names are more pro.

I love the Rising SC idea. It sounds well. It rolls off the tongue beautifully.
It sounds a bit like Sporting. But this wouldn't be a copycat name. It would be a name with real local history/meaning behind it, so that's nice.

But I don't like the "rising phoenix" imagery... :) that's cool for a fan group, too cartoonish for a football team.
The logo shouldn't be a rising phoenix.
It could be more like Columbus Crew logo, idk. I'd have to think much more about it. But the important meaning behind the name is not a flying red bird. The meaning, the context that matters in this case is the local fan group that got together and pushed for soccer for a long time. So focus a logo on that, not on a cartoon.

    rofl.
How about Wellington River Phoenix FC and a logo with a guy looking at bacon.
It would resonate with me at least.

That would be cool though similar to those indoor driving golf ranges.

The problem with this state is they can't even get good regular attendances to any sport be it hockey(playing out far west side hurts) or even baseball which is supposedly all amercian sport(hotdogs and cracker jack).

Are you saying I should come up with a nickname for a newly rebranded Arizona Sahuaros?

    How about:

    Phoenix Sand Dragons?
    Phoenix Swarm?
    Arizona Bandits?
    Arizona Fuego?
    Phoenix Venom?

There have been tons of names proposed before me also. I just don't see a plant, even a cactus, as a formidable mascot.

agreed, although i don't love mascots overall. the only one that makes sense to me is the Timber Tim / Timber Joe guy with Timbers, and only because he's a fan who became their mascot organically.

    I sort of agree.

FC Barcelona is good enough for me. If they all of a sudden started calling themselves the the Barcelona Wildcats, it would just sound cheesy.

But that is part of the American sports culture. I think the official name should be FC Phoenix and the fans should give the team a nickname. More than likely that won't happen. The owner will want to give the team some sort of mascot/identity for marketing purposes.

Incidentally, I also don't like it when an MLS team tries to name themselves after a foriegn team. I can accept Chivas USA or even DC United, but Real Salt Lake? Come on. There is no Royal Salt Lake.
