With all the recent trades and waiver drafts ahead for the next season I think it’s time to post up the news in a new thread!

Who do you guys think will break out in 2019 and be new flavors? My money is on Carleton and Pomykal

Bello, Bello, Bello. young left back is going to get lots of eyes this season.

MacMath, Richey. More starting younger goalkeepers the better.

Hopefully Yueill and Tommy Thompson with the change of leadership.

Rowe and Rosenberry look to benefit from changes of scenery too i think.

My money is on Bello. He showed only a little in 2018 but he was very impressive in those brief cameos. With Atl Utd releasing Garza and not signing anyone else; a lot will count on Bello to step up.

NYRB: now that is what a strong development pipeline looks like. Before leaving, the players contribute to the senior team.

The globalization of MLS coaching and executive leadership continues apace. FCD just hired Gremio's executive director of football.

That's still just a rumor. Probably true as most of the rumors have been but not official. Anyone have any idea of what differences, pluses and minuses a Brazilian GM not familiar with MLS might have?

Thoughts De Beor at ATL and the young Americans there? I know during his successful stint in Holland he played youth. His Inter failure and Palace failure were both short runs with other questionable issues. Thoughts?

Yes, the question being do foreign coaches and GM's really care about young Americans from their academies or do they try and sign and play veterans?

Foreign coaches are the same as domestic coaches when it comes to their goal... its always to win. Clubs hire coaches and let them know the expectations of the club. In this case, it’s to win the league and fight for the MLS Cup win as well. Very different than the expectations the coach was given at FCD. Galaxy will have closer expectations to ATL than FCD no matter if the coach is domestic or foreign.

It the case of my question he’s shown when given the duty to play youth he’s done so. Will that experience of playing youth and winning in Holland help any of our youth there find consistent PT.

Good point. If the new coach also rarely plays youth the blame shifts to Blank and Bocanegra.

    So Cal
Next year looks really interesting for young players next year. this past year we had a huge uptick in overall minutes but those minutes were largely concentrated i between a few players with guys getting a ton of minutes or just barely playing. Carlton, in my opinion, could go either way...depending upon a lot of things that may or may not be behind the scenes and we have a lot of other candidates too. Michailovic has been flying under the radar. (I fully expect him to have a true breakout season...whether it will be the best of the year I don't know). Bello looks to be a strong possibility. Pomykal and many others. If all goes right, we could have a year that equals or betters the last in terms of overall minutes but distributes those minutes more evenly and to more players in the middle of the park. Of the 10 young players last year that got 100+ minutes, the top 4 and 6 out of 10 were defenders and the two most offensive minded players were Adams and Saucedo. this year, we are mentioning Carlton, Ferreira, Pomykal, Mihalovic, Baird as guys expected to break through. It would be significant if 2 of those would have a breakthrough this year. (I say two because I feel that Mihalovic hasn't broken through but only due to injury...we need a Carlton, Pomykal etc to also breakthrough).

Damn. Rumors swirling that Sigi passed away. I knew he was in the hospital but that really sucks if true.

    RIP.

Young players were given minutes at Atlanta. I doubt management is going to intervene to the point of instructing the manager to play certain nationalities.

They didn't play Barco that much either. He got brief appearances past midseason. Do you think he would've gotten any minutes if he didn't cost 15M?

Wide-attacking players to follow this upcoming season

    name(age)
    position(formation)
whoscored in the number of starts at the position

    Handwalla Bwana(19) 5'9 145lb
    LAM(4231)
    WS_7.0 in 3 starts
his 3.3 succesful dribbles per start would have placed him 4th among all players last season. Castillo was the only American in the top 25. Bwana also had nice 66% success rate on this dribbles. A foot injury limited his minutes

    Fafa Picault(27) 5'8" 168lb
    LAM(4231)
    WS_7.3 in 20 starts
10 goals and 5 assists(overall) for probably the strongest season for a American wide player in the '18 MLS. Should have been called for Camp for the sake of the credibility of the process.

    Corey Baird(22) 5'10" 160lb
    RAM(4231)
    WS_8.7 in 1 start; 1g 1a
The bulk of his starts actually came at forward. But his WS_8.7 in only one start a RAM was pretty imperious. He bullied the right flank in a late season demolition of New England.

    Juan Agudelo(26) 6'1" 183lb
    LM, RAM, RM:
    WS 7.2, 7.0, 6.8 in 11 starts
Showed striking improvement in his mentality, work-rate, defensive work, and physicality. Was impressive in the Portugal friendly. Needs to find a position and starter's berth in New England.

    Sebastian Saucedo(21) 5'7" 145lb
    LF, LAM
    WS 7.5, 6.9 in 9 starts
Impressive work-rate, defending, crossing, and for a little guy, physicality. 3 goals and 5 assists in 11 games worth of minutes.

    Paul Arriola(23) 5'6" 146lb
    RAM, RWB
    WS 7.0, 7.5 in 9 starts
Versatile player whose best position may be AM/CM. Strong work-rate and defense. Showed marked improvement in attacking passing. But will DC move him to RB?

    Jonathan Lewis(21) 5'7" 150lb
    supersub
3 goals and 4 assists in 561 minutes of his 2 season career.
WS 7.3 in 3 starts at RAM during the '17 season.
Incredibilty productive player who hasn't been given the opportunities his numbers merit.

    Cristian Roldan(23) 5'8" 165lb
    RAM
WS 7.3 in 15 starts; 3 goals and 3 primary assists
Super versatile player. Had a standout year in what was probably his 4th best position. That $4 million contract was a bargain for some with his all-around game. His statisically strong categories were:

    Passing Strong
    Finishing Strong
    Long shots Strong
    Aerial Duels Strong
Holding on to the ball Strong
    Concentration Strong
    Tackling Strong
    Blocking the ball Strong

Not a new flavor but I'm hoping with the club having some direction and him staying healthy I think we see Lletget take another step

correction: Jonathan Lewis's starts in '17 came at LAM, rather than RAM.

Barco had disciplinary issues, but again, AU gave minutes to young players.

With Dockal having left, Tanner reportedly wants to see Picault moved to off-forward. Jonathan Lewis would be nice a replacement on the wings, especially if Accam never gets back to his best. Make it happen, Philly!

NT fans should be happy. He needed out of Petke's archaic coaching system.

Glad he's going to get another chance. Left back is such a barren position he didn't need to be held hostage.

Maybe Orlando will make a play for Carleton now.

I think Atlanta and Orlando are "rivals", so I doubt it.

Until Orlando does something the rivalry may only be from their end.
