I'm early to set up this thread this year because I am truly excited to watch MLS again this year. 2018 was a bad year to be a Crew fan, but it all paid off in the end. I'm living abroad now, so watching games will be a bit tougher, but I get up 5-8 hours ahead of the American-majority readership so I will be able to post that much earlier!

I believe I have these tables correct; @newtex am I right to believe that each team plays 11 non-conference opponents, with no teams needing a 12th game? In any event, here is what the format will look like this year to start.

I believe that every team plays 12 non-conference opponents. That is, every team in the other conference. Home and away against their own conference is 22 games plus the 12 non-conference games makes 34 total games.

Standings in this thread are done Win-Tie-Loss and traditionally from the perspective of the defending champ conference. That means the 2019 standings week-to-week will be done from the side of the East since they won in 2018.

Teams will play one game against every team in the other conference this year. That means there will be a total of 144 inter-conference regular season games. Games in the CCL, Open Cup, and playoffs do not count.

    Past results:

    Yearly winners (W-T-L):

    2018: EAST 56-25-51
    2017: EAST 51-32-39
    2016: WEST 38-30-32
    2015: WEST 45-20-35
    2014: WEST 36-26-28
    2013: WEST 41-22-27

    2012: EAST 35-23-32
    2011: WEST 57-58-47
    2010: WEST 60-33-35

    2009: WEST 42-28-37
    2008: EAST 42-20-36
    2007: EAST 30-26-28
    2006: EAST 26-21-25
    2005: EAST 37-16-19
    2004: WEST 27-19-24
    2003: EAST 29-21-20
    2002: WEST 33-8-19
    2001: WEST 26-14-23

    2000: CENTRAL 31-13-30
    1999: WEST 35-18-19
    1998: WEST 36-9-27

This schedule is correct, as far as I can tell, as of 1/23/19. Some games may get moved around.

    Inter-conference games by week, 2019:
Week 1: 4 games (East hosts 0, West hosts 4)
    Week 2: 2 (0,2)
    Week 3: 6 (6,0)
    Week 4: 0 (0,0)
    Week 5: 2 (1,1)
    Week 6: 5 (5,0)
    Week 7: 8 (1,7)
    Week 8: 6 (6,0)
    Week 9: 6 (2,4)
    Week 10: 4 (1,3)
    Week 11: 7 (5,2)
    Week 12: 7 (1,6)
    Week 13: 7 (4,3)
    Week 14: 9 (5,4)
    Week 15: 2 (2,0)
    Week 16: 4 (3,1)
    Week 17: 3 (2,1)
    Week 18: 11 (5,6)
    Week 19: 2 (0,2)
    Week 20: 5 (3,2)
    Week 21: 2 (1,1)
    Week 22: 8 (4,4)
    Week 23: 5 (3,2)
    Week 24: 6 (2,4)
    Week 25: 0 (0,0)
    Week 26: 5 (2,3)
    Week 27: 1 (1,0)
    Week 28: 6 (4,2)
    Week 29: 9 (3,6)
    Week 30: 2 (0,2)
    Week 31: 0 (0,0)

The West starts off with six home games which is not unusual but the East catches up in week 3. Things then go back and forth for while until it evens up again in week 13. The East takes a lead in home games in Week 14 and doesn't give it up until the very end of the season.

The mid-point of the inter-conference schedule is June 1st. That is one week earlier than 2018 and two weeks earlier than 2017.

The first week on inter-conference play is in the books. The West hosted all four games, and received 7/12 possible points to show for it.

Six games in, and the West is putting up a sizeable chunk of points to reclaim the trophy.

(Note: I've removed a letter from each column team name to help the big table fit onto a single page. Let me know if it is still problematic.)

2.17 Home PPG is nothing to sneeze at; moreover, the fact that the points have come from five Western teams against five different Eastern teams (Montreal has won and lost a game) is also indicative of a more competitive season.

When the East starts to play at home next week, we'll start to have some indication of how they're doing. The "geography is destiny" part of me believes that, as more "Central" teams (Cincinnati, Minnesota, Nashville) join the league and establish themselves, the average distance flown/driven for a lot of teams go down, and the more competitive this competition becomes.

As @newtex says, all even. But, the nuance suggests the East are on par for a slightly better season.

The East gets its six home games, and even Chicago's loss included them getting two goals in. Which led to the East getting 23 total goals, with 19 goals allowed, a GD of +4.

We don't have enough data to know for sure, but the 3.5 goals per game has me very excited about this league this year. If that keeps up for even a few more weeks, we're in for a wild ride.

Won't goal differential, goals scored, and goals allowed produce the same result? Just making up numbers, if the East scores 200 and the West scores 190, the East will be 20 ahead on goal differential, 10 ahead on goals scored, and 10 ahead on goals allowed.

Yes, hence why I arbitrarily chose one of them as the tiebreaker. I'm fairly certain I have inconsistently said which one is the tiebreaker in years past, because - as you point out - they'll all point to the same outcome.

Not by me. Although I did change from TFC to TOR. Someday I might switch FCD to DAL. We shall see.

I am going to stick with CLB/COR instead of making one of them COL. Ambiguity is no good. I will admit that I just like LAX.

A tiebreaker may never be necessary just like there may never be a tie in the Electoral College, but sometimes people and organizations make rules for unlikely but possible problems. In some cases, making rules in advance can prevent a legal dispute if the unlikely event happened without a policy about handling it.

If @newtex and I break down into recriminations over a tiebreaker in a meaningless stat-collecting thread, things have gone very badly in my personal life and I would appreciate a PM asking me if I'm ok

The West had a goal differential per game of +2.5. I wonder if a conference has ever had that high a goal differential per game with the same amount or fewer points than the other conference had that week.
