Remember, kids, as always, when the individual in question (or their agent) says, "There is absolutely no truth to these rumors," then there is absolutely, unequivocally, 100% truth to those rumors.
Vieira was very kind in the timing. NYCFC has 13 days until their next match. In the world of mid-season managerial change, that's forever.
Torrent gets the job. Domènec Torrent Named #NYCFC Head Coach #WelcomeDomènec READ ➡️ https://t.co/jdSBKOuYsn pic.twitter.com/JIVig7SFfC— New York City FC (@newyorkcityfc) June 11, 2018
That's an impressive hire. His resume speaks for itself. NYCFC looks to be in very good hands going forward.
The leap from assistant to manager is always tough though. Mike Phelan had a hell of a resume, having worked under Alex Ferguson for 15 years, and he turned out to be an awful manager. So maybe Torrent turns out to be great, maybe he doesn't, but it's tough to judge the hire without seeing how his teams actually play.
Normally I'd agree with that statement but in this case I would think it would be different because, tactics wise you're getting someone who does everything the same. He'll play a similar possession style that Vieira had and I don't think the team would suffer much if at all. The same goes for RB as they have an institutional style ingrained into all the teams (high press) and if and when Marsch goes his assistants will just pick up were he left off and the team will be fine.
https://aroundmls.com/archive/f/backpass-quitting-the-rapids Needless to say, these statements are not playing well in the Rapids fanbase.
As warm as it probably is, would he trade it for Hudson's seat, Stahr's seat, Garde's seat or Olsen's seat?
Hudson and Stahre are barely a half year in their jobs, so who knows how warm their seats are, or how much pressure they are under. Olsen.........that's a good question. I think he gets this full season, and if there isn't an upward trend from July onward I don't know if he survives. DC's expectations haven't been that high for a while now. With Audi Field opening, and new investors taking over.............those expectations are going to increase significantly. This is Kreis' team now. Orlando is woefully under performing, and consistently inconsistent. It's playoffs or bust for Orlando this season.
When does the GM get canned? Certainly not going to argue that Kreis didn't deserve the boot, but Kreis didn't have sole control over the inferior players on the payroll.
So does Kreis continue to get credit for the two trips to MLS Cup with RSL (meaning he'll be in the running for additional jobs/get hired in a year or two), or do the back-to-back failures mean he's destined for the USL?
Apparently his path to the USMNT has taken a bit of a detour. And just for the record: I was on that bandwagon.
I wasn't on it, but he certainly looked better than he did the last couple stops. It's almost shocking his failures since RSL
I'm not convinced he was ever going to get a fair shot in NY, but I really thought Orlando was going to work out for him.
And how does Lagerway rate given the issues in Seattle? Could RSL have been a situation of Lagerway and Kreis being better together than apart?
The league has changed a lot. So much that what they did together was superior in what the league was then. But, now both may be out of their respective depths? I figured with Seattle's resources and Lagerway's insights that Seattle could become a magnificent team. It's not happened. I felt that what made Kreis good was that Lagerway found him precisely the players that would work in the system he envisioned which was relatively novel in MLS at the time. MLS is more sophisticated and has better talent at nearly all positions. I think maybe Kreis needs to be an assistant in Europe for a while.
For me, it could be two different things. 1) He doesn't know how to manage bigger names / players who like to exert their own control. It's why some college coaches can't coach professionals. They don't have the same control and they struggle with the skills they need to get what they need out of players. 2) He doesn't have the time to build the core of players he wants because he has to win now. NYCFC and Orlando want trophies and they want them now. Kreis might not be that type of coach.
I was never on the Kreis for MNT post, just like Nowak was the flavor of the month after 2004. But Kreis was in a no-win situation with NYCFC. I'm honestly shocked he took the Orlando job. That was a shitshow from the outside, and I figured he'd want a more stable situation after NYCFC. Now he's like Preki - going from Chivas USA to Toronto FC. He spent three years in the wilderness before rehabilitating his reputation with D3 Sacramento.
