Just saw this today. MLS and Adidas team up to release anthems written by some great bands about their hometown teams. Some big names, and all the tracks are free downloads. Tracks: Akwid: "¡Chivas Explosivas!" (Chivas USA) Bad Brains: "D.C. United" (D.C. United) Barenaked Ladies: "TFC" (Toronto FC) Blackpool Lights: "Ain't Nobody Gonna Stop Us Now" (Kansas City Wizards) Damone: "Revolution" (New England Revolution) Mike Jones: "Houston Dynamo (Don't Play)" (Houston Dynamo) Kinky: "We Are the Galaxy" (L.A. Galaxy) Meg & Dia: "The Mighty R-E-A-L" (Real Salt Lake) OK Go: "Here Comes the Fire" (Chicago Fire) The Polyphonic Spree: "H-O-O-P-S Yes!" (FC Dallas) The Rapture: "Whoo! Alright, Yeah... Uh Huh" (New York Red Bulls) RJD2: "It's Your Crew" (Columbus Crew) Rose Hill Drive: "Goal!" (Colorado Rapids) I haven't listened to any of them yet, but it's a great idea. Here's the link.
Lots of good music out there. Only a few exceptions, with the exception of Mike Jones phoning in lyrics about Dynamo Diesel the Fox. Seriously.
Seriously, the best the GALAXY could do was "KINKY" WHO?? Adidas could have dished out a LITTLE MONEY, to get some better acts from each city.
I like how they got local groups to do the songs. Although some songs suck. Im not shure if i like the Chivas USA one yet, I thought Houstons is cool.
All this has done is make me lose any remaining respect for the artists that sold themselves out to make these awful songs. And that is for the bands that I have actually heard of, which is about 3 of them.
Houston does have the best. Someone did a pretty bad job writing down the lyrics for the song though.
i do love rjd2, but that song was TERRIBLE! was it just me or did a lot of those songs sound like 1980's hair/glam? i didn't hear a single one that i'd want to hear again
Most of these songs are pretty craptastic. Bad Brains: "D.C. United" (D.C. United) Damone: "Revolution" (New England Revolution) Prolly the best one. Meg & Dia: "The Mighty R-E-A-L" (Real Salt Lake) RJD2: "It's Your Crew" (Columbus Crew) Rose Hill Drive: "Goal!" (Colorado Rapids) Those are the best ones. The rest seemed kinda phoned in. And I am pretty indifferent to Mike Jones. I guess I tend to like underground and old school hip hop.
The Rapture song is the only one that seemed not "phoned in". Very cool that they actually reference the NYRB supporter groups and the lyrics are funny.
Ok...no. As in no. Not gonna happen. As in...will never happen. How many crowds at MLS games have you ever heard spontaneously erupting into a chorus of "Get in the Game"? Mmm hmm. I thought so. And you can imagine 11,000 people singing "It's Your Crew"? It will never happen. Let's get back to reality. Let's consult the expert: Google. A 10-second search brings up results like "Jock Rock Volume 11" and so on. So we have plenty material here. We just need to change a few words to make it fit MLS. For example: - Instead of "Who Let the Dogs Out", how about "Who Let the DC United Out?" That could work. - Or instead of KC and the Sunshine Band's disco jam "Get Down Tonight", why not try something like "Do a little dance...make a little love...get down Chris Albright"? - Or instead of "We Are the Champions" by Queen, it could be something like: "We are Columbus, my friends...and we'll keep on whining...in our pants...". - Or instead of "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC, it could be perhaps "E-du...shook me all night long...". - Or the words "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, good-bye" could be easily altered to something like: "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, Chicago Fire!" I could see that being a real crowd pleaser, especially with the Under-8's. - Or you remember that classic AC/DC rocker "Highway to Hell"...change around just a couple words and presto, you have: "I'm on a high-way to Salt Lake...I'm on a high-way to Salt Lake..." - Or Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" could be quickly converted to "Cel-e-brate Cobi Jones Pavon!" That could be a real toe tapper. The possibilities are endless...
Huge kudos for the idea. I'm giving it a nixay on the actual application- the songs just sound a bit too contrived to me. But, maybe it will help a bit. I like the idea at least.
Maybe next year they should open it up to fans to write the lyrics to their team's anthem and the winner has a well known artist/band compose the music and record it. Might have a better result, considering the fans have a vested interest in the intricacies, traditions, and history of their club.
Great idea! BTW, that Columbus song is pretty gay. Also, the fans aren't going to sing the entire song but probably just the chorus over and over again....so in that aspect I think most of the songs do work well if the fans wanted to chant them. But please no stadium music to force the fans to chant, drums work but not speakers please!!
The video remix tool thingy is pretty cool. I did one for New York with The Rapture song; I am particularly proud that I lined up Watereuss blocking shots to the part of the song that goes "You People Don't Score No More, You just stand there like this". I am the new Kubrik...or not. Link to video below. http://www.jumpcut.com/view?id=6BDE9D0A4C0C11DCA99A000423CEF5B0
Almost every one of those songs is complete garbage. I like Rose Hill Drive but that Rapids song is awful. Houston's truely sucks. Only one that works is FCD's. I could see that HOOPS Yes chant working @ PHP. Same with the whoa we are the Galaxy chant even thought that song is terrible.
They should have taken the money they wasted on the other 12 artists...and given it all to the band that did the HOOPS song...and had them do 12 more songs: 1 for each other city. In fact, the other songs could all be variations on the original HOOPS song for all I care, and they'd still be better than the rest of the junk.
When I was listening to this one, it just reminded me that there are at least 2 better "Revolution" songs in the pop world (The Cult and of course the Beatles), and both would easily do a better job of motivating a crowd, as both those other songs are actually good.
