I think that red card is one that literally could go either way. On the one hand, I think it’s harsh because the whistle hadn’t even blown yet. Hard to give somebody a red card for kicking the ball when the play is still active. But on the other hand, Chapman was standing right there, and obviously thought that there was clear intent to strike the player with the ball. And if in his judgment, if that’s violent conduct, then it’s violent conduct. Personally, I think he knew exactly what he was doing.
Right now I feel like we have no idea who is going to be playing well come play-off time, with the exception of LAFC.
Absolutely true. There is no possibility for a misinterpretation of fact on this one. It’s a straight judgment call. And the guy standing right there is going to have a better idea on that judgment then the guy upstairs.
You stole my take. I have been, for 2 or 3 weeks, thinking of calling a San Jose v New England MLS Cup.
True. Oftentimes, teams peak a bit too soon prior to the playoffs. For as dominant as LAFC have been this year, they can be had. MLS has had 10 different champions in the last 12 years? It's also been a while since the Supporters Shield winner have also hoisted MLS Cup.
Well Portland just but a real beat down on the Gals. Ibra could have easily been chucked wit ha second yellow, but didn't.
They're peaking too early. The ditches are littered with teams that were hotter than fire in July, and were nowhere to be found when October rolled around.
He booked him for dissent, so I’m guessing no. The official timeline from MLS has Asprilla getting a red card after the final whistle as well as Polenta.
Did you watch the game? Zlatan abused Chapman for about a minute after a foul was called against, Chapman didn't do anything. It was later in the game after not getting a call he abused him again, not to after about a minute of abuse did he card him and Zlatan didn't stop. Announcers even said that if he doesn't stop he's going to get thrown out. If this was any other player he would have been red card after the first time abusing Chapman, if not the first time then the second time.
Uh, no, it wouldn’t have. Believe me, I WISH you were right. I WISH more refs would pull the trigger on dissent, even for players on yellows. But they usually don’t.
It's worth noting that Chapman is a former professional player so he's probably better than most at reading the players. Note that Holden on color commentary also vehemently agreed with the card.
Afraid? No. He was creating space to try to keep the player from doing anything particularly stupid and force a silly red card. I don't think the tactic worked particularly well in his favor tonight because the visual dissent continued, and Zlatan repeatedly closed down that space.
This dissent was over the top, he got in Chapman's face three times during the game and only got a yellow. If this was anybody else they probably would have been red carded after the first occasion.
You’re dreaming. There are very few referees on the planet at the professional level that go to the red card on the first occasion of dissent. Even when it IS way over the top.
Part of what “helped” Zlatan not get tossed was that he was wearing the Cpt Armband.. as such he gets a pass to go talk to the official a bit more for all the instances.. though it seemed JDS was the one holding Zlatan back
You mean sort of like when a goalkeeper gets a yellow card for time-wasting, and then after that he can waste all the time in the world, because refs would almost never give him a second one?
Like I said it should have been at least a yellow, then if not on the second occasion, but the the third occasion he should have gotten his second yellow. He didn't because it was Zlatan.
How many players have you seen get that sort of second yellow? A couple this season. How many have continued to act that way even on a yellow? Many more.
Yes he was the captain, but the way he was acting it shouldn't have mattered. Chapman was calling JDS over to tell him stop or he'll do something about it. Which he didn't at least on the first and third occasions, he did at least on the second occasion.
