Well, if Anthony Hudson can get a glance from Newcastle United, who's to say Brad Friedel won't land another gig somewhere else? For Bruce Arena, this stint in New England is kind of like a redemption tour for him. He would have resigned from the USMNT following the World Cup, if the USA had made it. Things weren't bad for him at LA, and maybe he took the job with the national team out of respect for what was happening during the last qualifying cycle. But he ran into the problem Bob Bradley had...stuck on playing the same guys all the time. If there were changes made to the roster, the players called up were not up to the task, and whether a coach's attitude is intense or laid back, nothing seemed to work. The MLS Coach of the Year award will be interesting. Bradley has the inside track, but Almeyda and Arena are worthy of consideration for the award too.
We still haven't replaced Calvo's spot on the roster yet, and I still think shipping him off to Chicago was the correct move.
Vancouver is so bad.. It's going to be amazing when Vancouver becomes the first MLS team to lose to a CPL team. The good news is that they will be in BC Place. The bad news is they suck, weren't able to get any road goals, and the Cavalry are the best team in CPL by a fairly large amount.
The difference is that Anthony Hudson had 4 or 5 other head coaching positions before failing with Colorado ... including TWO stints as head coach of different men's national teams. Brad Friedel? There is simply no comparison in the CVs of the 2 men. When your first real coaching job is as dramatic a failure as Friedel's tenure with New England (he may have coached a youth team I think), you are simply less likely to get another chance very quickly.
I was bummed to be traveling last night during the slate of games, then initially pleased to see a game on the television on the airport sports bar in Boise. Alas, it was the friendly, so not worth it for me.
To be fair, for all the articles about how WNT don't share the same values as that outlet, they kind of do share two values ... popularity and money.
