Had a chuckle at this... Super Bowl announced attendance is 70,081. MLS Cup attendance in December was 73,019.— Justin Felder (@Justin_FOX5) February 4, 2019
Oh yeah, 13656 for USA vs Costa Rica in San Jose. Better, but the difference was mostly all Costa Rica fans...
I wonder if the difference was the amount of press or what? I'd have presumed, since the field is smaller, that you could fit more people into the stadium for gridiron football.
well that isn't completely accurate. the stated expanded capacity for football is 75000 and the stated expanded capacity for soccer is 71000. The record attendance for football is 77430 and for soccer is 73019. So you were comparing the stated max capacity for football to the record attendance for soccer. The difference between the 2 setups is actually around 4k.
Honestly, security and comfort are all reasonable explanations, but stadiums have historically gotten as many people in as possible for the Super Bowl. Something strange happened in Atlanta... Not sold out? http://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/pats-fans-outweighed-rams-fans-at-super-bowl This claims the difference was that a home team was playing, and the price difference, but that suggests a lack of a sellout... Finally some news out of Columbus (which aligns with circumstantial evidence we've been seeing here): Pete Edwards: One month in, 'We’ve sold so many more tickets than we ever dreamed' and
Didn't see many of them. Course, my section was on the Outlaws/SJ Ultras side. Mostly just families and groups of people. Some Costa Rica/USA flags, but mostly just normally-dressed fans. The downpour didn't deter a ton of people, it seems, even though the parking lot flooded, and we had to park waaaay away from the stadium.
Arsenal reported 54,648 for their Europa League game against Bate on Thursday. Asked why The Emirates looked half empty, their spokesperson admitted that the number of occupied seats was under 30,000.
40,345 at Tigres, for some comparison with Liga MX CCL attendance. 10,021 in Houston (which is actually better than I expected)
Season ticket holders automatically got tickets to the Houston game. That surely inflated the tickets distributed number. Plus the number of Guatemalans that came out. Next week's game against Tigres is not part of the Dynamo season ticket package. Of course, it is against Tigres which is one the most popular Mexican teams in Houston so there will be a big crowd.
