https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019/05/02/2019-mls-all-star-game-atletico-madrid-opponent There are currently no league games scheduled between July 27 and August 3.
I mean to be fair they have been the better Madrid team for the last few years, and they consistently finish in the top 3 of La Liga (which I know isn't saying much but still).
Atletico is as much a giant, at the very least, as-say- Arsenal or Tottenham. If we're going to have this sort of all-star game, Atletico Madrid is as good a team as any, and better than quite a few we've faced in the past [e.g Celtic, Westham, Everton, Roma, Fulham]. For a friendly, this is a pretty interesting matchup.
The problem is they aren't as popular here as Arsenal, Tottenham, or even Celtic, Everton or Roma. What in the world happened to the supposedly confirmed matchup against Liga MX all stars?
The best one of these is still the first one when we beat Chivas at the Home Depot center. It was the first all star game to have actual passion to it. I kind of think it should always be a Mexican opponent. I think this game gave them the idea for Chivas USA lol.
Hmmm. The last few years, say the last solid 5+ years, it is a wash. Even Steven. The last two years it is Atletico who holds the edge. A bite of the crabapple, It's Called Football, 2019. Atletico is 2nd, and Real is 3rd 2018, Atletico is 2nd, and Real is 3rd 2017, Real is 1st and Atletico is 3rd. 2016, Real is 2nd and Atletico is 3rd. 2015, Real is 2nd and Atletico is 3rd. 2014, Atletico is 1st and Real is 3rd.
I thought her name was Krandle. Int'l titles, homeboy. RM has 4 World and CL Championships in that time frame. Case closed. RM is the club of the decade already, worldwide.
Not your homeboy, It's called Appleball. You see, your problem is with the words "last few years". Which were exactly the words "Aeronaught" used. You want it to instead refer to "The last decade". Be my guest in doing so, but then you are choosing to ignore what Aeronaught was saying. Atletico Madrid is a perfectly fine All-Star opponent, and far better than the MXL clown show that might have been.....
The league has evolved to the point where the All-Star Game is just an excuse for me to take a night off from MLS.
No, I referred to the time frame posted, just added last decade superfluously. In the last few years, RM has been better. The league is not the only metric, the CL is of utmost importance, and for many, it is more important. Ok, homeboy LMX will never participate in this, there are bigger fish to fry.
Such as losing in the quarters of the CWC year after year? Sorry, can't do that anymore "homeboy", that competition is gone.
It didn't give them the idea, they were wooing Vergara into buying into MLS. I think MLS is too good for the all stars to be playing a mexican team at home. They should be able to win at least 8 out of 10 that way - and we saw that even in that first ASG against Chivas. That's exactly why that all stars vs all stars idea was being thrown around.
Atletico has a historically great defense. While finishing third in 2015-2016, they allowed 18 goals, which is 0.47 per game. In 2011-2012, Barcelona was second, and they were 30 points ahead of Valencia in third. Since Atletico joined the top three in 2012-2013, there have been seven seasons including this one with 2 games left. Atletico has allowed the fewest goals the last four times and six out of seven. In 2014-2015, only Barcelona allowed fewer. In 264 games, Atletico allowed 179 (0.68 per game), Barcelona allowed 223 (0.84 per game), and Real allowed 278 (1.05 per game), which is 55 percent more than Atletico. Atletico may never has as many big scorers as Barcelona or Real, but Atletico can get 1-0 wins. Here's a comparison of goals allowed in the last seven seasons including this one: Juventus: 167/263 = 0.63 Bayern Munich: 157/236 = 0.67 Atletico: 179/264 = 0.68 Paris Saint-Germain: 188/263 = 0.71 Barcelona: 223/264 = 0.84 Manchester City: 238/264 = 0.90 Real: 278/264 = 1.05
ESPN has links to 15 popular clubs, showing that Atletico is in good company. They have the top six English clubs, Barcelona, Real, Atletico, Bayern, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, PSG, Club America, and Chivas Guadalajara. They have pages for many clubs, but the Soccer drop-down menu from any ESPN page (not just ESPNFC) names those 15.
