I've paid 4 times total at the Dick. WCQs in 2008, 2013, 2017, and the Olympic Qualifiers in 2016. What do all those things have in common....
For those who are interested in how much Seattle and Atlanta skews the numbers, when you take those two teams' attendance figures out of the equation, MLS still averages 19,619 fans per game.
In contrast to most first division soccer leagues, MLS has a narrow attendance band. The lowest draws are well over half the mean, and only two teams draw more than twice the average, and not much more, at that.
It's too bad BMO's capaxity is 28k fans. I think TFC would be able to average 30k for the foreseeable future, beginning next year.
A few years ago I checked and MLS' worst drawing team drew better than the lowest drawing team in every league in the world except the Prem and the Bundesliga.
Depending on the year, sometimes they beat those two; Ingolstadt and Bournemouth in 2016-17 are below all of MLS 2017. There's reason to lament Columbus being under 15,000, but so were three (of only sixteen) teams in Super League, four in La Liga and seven in Serie A. (None in LMX, interestingly.) This is one of the fruits of fixed league membership; it's harder to build a lasting fan base when a very bad year sends a team off to the minors. In many cases, upgrading to a large and luxurious enough facility to draw 20,000 (exact number varies) in a major league setting isn't possible when a team can't count on the ongoing revenue to service the loans. This builds an underclass of teams that regularly bounce between the top two leagues, dominant against the true minors, but lacking the players, capital, and support to make a run at the real contenders... but much more of that is for a different thread.
They updated the logo a bit, and added "SC", but is that really a rebrand on the level of the others. It's the same name and color. Kansas' Jayhawk has been updated over the decades, but I wouldn't call that a rebrand. They're still the Jayhawks and they still wear crimson and blue with some beak yellow trim from time to time. The Crew are still the Crew and still wear Yellow, black, and white.
Atlanta United is only going to have TWO full stadium games in 2017. September 16th vs. Orlando and October 22nd vs. Toronto
Biggest regular season crowd in TOYOTA Park, more than the 2007 LA Beckham game (21,374). All-time record crowd in TOYOTA Park 21,723 in 2009 playoffs against RSL.
I had a standing room ticket at that RSL playoff match. Didn't realize it was a stadium record. Terrific feeling in that stadium when it is full.
