Every year I like creating an offseason thread that we can entertain ourselves with; 2 years ago it was the MLS 100 best players. A year before that it was a history of South American football.
This 2012 I got a good one, one that has literally taken me 2 years to come up with gathering material and source information.
The following stories regarding MLS are TRUE. For the safety of some we can’t divulge sources, most no longer are working in MLS but some are.
I hope you enjoy this thread some of this stuff is pure gold.
This thread is going to have stories, flopped player acquisitions, and behind the scenes stuff we can all laugh at and enjoy.
    1. The man from nowhere.

Petter Villegas was born in Ecuador and played his soccer in New York but ended up being Puerto Rican. How does this happen? Well the story is one to behold.

Petter Villegas came to the US as a child, he attended Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, where he was a three-time New Jersey All State high school player, scoring 34 goals, assisted on 18 more in 1993. In 1999, he was named by The Star-Ledger as one of the top ten New Jersey high school soccer players of the 1990s.

In 1996 he played 3 games for the ill-fated MetroStars and was cut soon after… his unnoticeable career had him with the NY/NJ Stallions until 1999 when the MetroStars came calling again, how bad was the 99 MetroStars season? They were calling players from 96 back to the squad! But that’s a story of another day.

Villegas was one of the few bright spots of that 99 team. Actually Petter was a nice addition you could see there was very good talent in the Ecuadorian. Nice passing, good shooting ability, in 2000 he was muched improved as was the MetroStars. Having a career year in 2000 and 2001. A former employee at the MetroStars stated that Villegas was anything but humble, seeing himself as one of the top players of the MetroStars he made it a point to let the media know he would suit up for the US national team, after all it was the country he made a name for himself. And villegas waited… and waited… but alas Bruce Arena did not call and this angered Petter who felt he was just as good as any USMNT player. During the 2001 season Ecuador played a few friendlies at Giant Stadium. Villegas saw this as his chance, if the US did not want him surly Hernán Darío Gómez and Ecuador would, after all he was a rare commodity at the time an Ecuadorian playing abroad. So during those two friendlies he made it a point to hound Gomez and Ecuadors captian Alex Aguinaga so Gomez can take notice of this true gem! During that time it is wise to point out Villegas in NY had a reputation of beginning an A hole.

Gomez politely asked for his name and his number and the typically “thanks for the data we’ll keep in touch.” So Villages played so Ecuador could take notice…. During that time it was late 2002 and Villages was traded to DC where he had a solid season, but alas the World Cup had passed him by. Feeling MLS was inferior to his abilities Villages moved to Ecuador surly there nothing could stop his rise to the Ecuadorian national team. During his time in Ecuador in 5 years Villages moved from Aucas, Barcelona SC, Manta and Deportivo Cuenca. Mustering only 1 match during his stay at Barcelona one of Ecuador’s biggest clubs. But by then 2006 had passed him by and as did his chances with Ecuador.

After he could not gain employment in Ecuador, again a place he had garnered a reputation as a snob, he moved to the Puerto Rican Islanders, during his time in Puerto Rican he had gained Puerto Rican citizenship and finally Villegas got to play for a national team. Villegas made his debut with the Puerto Rican national team, scoring a goal against the Dominican Republic, which enabled Puerto Rico to advance to the next stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification.

It was in Puerto Rico where Villegas got his chance to finally play for a national team…

The man from No where finally got to play somewhere.

No, according to South Park you must wait 22.3 years after a tragedy before we can make jokes. If you're going to do this you should at least do it right.
