I sort of agree with the first article. If there is going to be an MLS 3.0 it won't be until next year when we find out what they'll do with the TV money.
An IT guy who's insecure about nerdy conversations is almost like a dog who's ashamed to piss in public. It's against nature.
To me it seems that when journalists or the news aggregating robots that are replacing them refer to "MLS 2.0" they are referring to the post-beckham era. Some features of 2.0: 2.0 - designated player, a.k.a. the Beckham Rule allows more star power to enter the league - LA galaxy elevated to something of a globally recognized brand - more teams build soccer-specific stadiums, resulting in better gameday experience - attendance numbers pretty good for all expansion teams that followed Toronto, several teams now selling out all of their home games - in general more tifo, more smoke bombs, more chanting, more flags, more crossed-axes tattoos on your disgustingly muscular calves, fewer fuzzy mascots, less family-friendly t-shirt cannoning - the league now seen as financially viable as opposed to "desperately clinging to the end of a fraying rope" Now here was MLS 1.0: - MLS in its start-up days following the '94 world cup. Everything before the Beckham era. A time of experimentation and awesome 90's stuff. - Marketing aimed at youth soccer/soccer moms - Xtreme everything with scorpions and flaming horses and stuff - Rule changes to make the game more palatable to NFL dads NO DRAWS, DRAWS ARE FOR WEAK EUROPEANS (countdown clock totally valid innovation, though. bring that sh*t back.) - Teams in Florida folding - All? teams playing in cavernous NFL stadiums, you can hear the echo of the ball as it bounces and the conversations of the trainers on the sidelines. now, MLS 3.0 is pretty much completely undefined, but I think the idea at this point is that we will know we are there when there are - no more chivas situations, the average league attendance is above 20,000 - there are never sub-10,000 games - lots of academy players coming up through the system and going on to play for the senior squad or "big 4" European leagues, even champions league teams. - errone playing in soccer specific stadiums on decent grass (except Vancouver, Portland, and Seattle, they are exempt because they ply the league HQ with aeroponically cultivated weed bushels and casks of 9% double IPA) - Having an Henry, Dempsey, Bradley, Ronaldinho, Chicharito etc. is commonplace and all teams have at least one player of similar renown, though Portland will have a policy of only fielding locally sourced, sustainably cultivated players, so not them. - league contracts LA galaxy cuz nobody really sees the point anymore - most importantly: MLS teams win concachampions at least every other year, make runs at the club world cup, and maybe play in libertadores, though I'm not sure if that's necessarily the best idea. Just my basic understanding.
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...-first-days-mls-30-and-other-week-19-thoughts So this has been around for a couple of days and I wanted to know what this means to everyone? What are your distinctions between 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, etc....? Personally I'm not sure we've reached that next level until we get the overwhelming majority of teams with SSS and a solid ownership/vision going forward. I think there are still quite a few clubs lacking in one or the other. Edit: Sorry Mods. Please merge with this thread, I didn't see it when I first searched for it.
Is MlS 3.0 the one where we signed old washed up players looking for one last pay day before they retire into the sun? Or the one where all of our teams get owned by EPL teams every summer? Or was that still MLS 2.0? So confussing
Where does NYCFC play? Where does New England and Seattle play? I wasn't talking about the league. I was referring to us, we are being run/play like it is MLS 1.0.
2.0 - David Villa & Kaka ? They're basically the same age as Beckham when he came. Damn we're going backwards again.
I think this pretty good. I'd add that 1.0 was trying to get soccer moms and their kids, 2.0 was trying to get the general sports fan, 3.0 is getting young, often former youth soccer players, 20's or 30'2 something Americans who already watch, albeit European or Mexican, soccer.
Its stupid, that is what it is, no matter what it means or stands for. The MLS is just the MLS. You don't see the NFL using NFL(prior to 1960) NFL 2(1960-1970) , and NFL 3(NFL/AFL Merger till now)...
