Just going through this and saw this is actually the April team twice. The May 2009 side was: Valdes (3) Srna (4) Pique (4) Yaya Toure (3) Xavi (8) Iniesta (7) Jadson (3) Messi (8) Forlan (6) Dzeko (5) Grafite (7) I will correct the original post to reflect that as well.
Also I think the ones for February and March 2009 are wrong as well. I think they are from 2010. I will check back tonight. Edit: So the February 2009 team was: Van der Sar (4) Maicon (4) Pepe (4) Vidic (4) Evra (3) Lampard (4) Cambiasso (4) Ribery (3) Messi (3) Raul (7) Mutu (3) March 2009 Cesar (4) Alves (5) Terry (2) Carragher (3) Xavi (4) Gerrard (8) Messi (6) Eto'o (3) Grafite (3) Huntelaar (5) Torres (3)
I think this one is actually October 2010, not 2009. I will try and track down the right one later. I'm just trying to redo your list @schwuppe so I have the number of appearances that everybody has ever made in the ESM. It's incredibly time consuming.
So October 2009 was actually: Buffon (2) Maicon (3) Nesta (5) Terry (5) A Cole (5) Fabregas (6) Lampard (7) Navas (5) Suarez (7) Torres (4) Pato (4)

April 2017 Buffon (9 votes) Carvajal (5 votes) Marcelo (12 votes) Chiellini (5 votes) Bonucci (8 votes) Eriksen (5 votes) Isco (4 votes) Dybala (6 votes) Mbappe (13 votes) Messi (11 votes) Cristiano Ronaldo (10 votes)

Team of the season 2016-7 Buffon (3 appearances) - 25 overall selections Ramos (4 appearances) - 39 overall selections David Luiz (3 appearances) - 22 overall selections Bonucci (3 appearances) - 23 overall selections Marcelo (3 appearances) - 34 overall selections Kante (4 appearances) - 25 overall selections Thiago Alcantara (3 appearances) - 24 overall selections Messi (4 appearances) - 46 overall selections Dybala (2 appearances) - 15 overall selections Cristiano Ronaldo (3 appearances) 35 overall selections Cavani (3 appearances) - 22 overall selections NB - Courtois also received 3 appearances but only received 24 overall selections and Casemiro also received two selections but only got 11 overall selections. Highest player selections not to feature: Courtois 24, Alves 19, Hazard 17, Mbappe 26, Ibrahimovic 20
Good work comme. Trying to understand why Dybala makes it instead of Hazard (maybe the former is classed as midfielder like Messi too presumably, and the latter as forward even though seemingly not in the months he made it in the XI - as an aside surprising he has less selections than Ibrahimovic for example). Also it might seem to make sense to include Alves and not Luiz, but I suppose they just pick out the most frequently included defenders, not bothering so much about making it a balanced back 4 position wise according to current roles.
Casemiro is also close to getting in (at a position that tends to be overlooked) while Modric trails behind.
Yeah, maybe that is a Hazard vs Ibra sort of case too, but I didn't watch very much of La Liga to be honest (Casimiro was playing pretty well occasionally when I did). With Hazard vs Dybala (and possibly Alves vs Luiz but like I say I think I know what happened there - Luiz did have the more selections of course) it was more a case of wondering why the data had slotted one player in rather than another, moreso than about the merits, although probably I would find it surprising if Hazard wasn't thought of in best XI territory for 16/17, despite not having CL games to play and impress in.
Can't say really because bizarrely Dybala is actually classified as a forward and Hazard as a midfielder in their total tallies.
Modric actually got 14 overall votes compared with Casemiro's 13 but he only made one team of the month. I know it says above 11 votes for Casemiro and 13 for Dybala but if you look at their totals in the list is weirdly 13 vs 15. Some bits don't add up.
Ah, ok, thanks, maybe it's the opposite of what I assumed and they wanted a 4-3-3 for the final selection (although putting Messi as a midfielder in that formation might be doubtful?). Not to want to divert the thread or clog it too much anyway, but just thought it was worth asking about.
I'm thinking of making a more accurate list of ESM teams of the year. That is, I'd like to take into account EVERY vote given to every player by every magazine. As you know, sometimes a player reaches a team of the month with just two votes and such, so taking into account all the votes gives a clearer view of on more players. However, there are a couple of hitches. Firstly, has anyone done a project like this before? Don't wanna bother if it's readily available. Also, I'm missing a couple of issues from the early 00s, so does anyone have access to scans of the ESM-page or the actual list (of every vote and not just the winners). Lastly, the 90s issues didn't yet offer information on each vote, so I don't suppose anyone knows if they're available anywhere? I'm thinking of mailing World Soccer, but not sure if they can be arsed with something like this.
So I don't think anyone has done this before (in fact pretty certain they haven't). What issues are you missing? What publication do you have? Very doubtful they are available anywhere. World Soccer may have it in some archives somewhere as they are the organisers of this but unclear if they would have them/be bothered to help.
Missing the following: 2001: Sep and Dec 2002: Jan through April, and the summer issue. 2003: July Anybody happen to have extra issues? Yeah, I figure the guys responding to e-mails at WS will be some summer interns who won't even know what I'm talking about, but I'll ask them about the 90s stuff nonetheless.
Of what magazine? World Soccer? I have all those issues. I think the best person to ask at World Soccer would probably be someone called Jamie Rainbow (if you can't get Gavin Hamilton the editor), I think he updates the ESM stuff online but they are very hit and miss about even updating their own website.
