True. This is a process and doesnt happen over night. But it seems they are closing in gradually.

They don't need to challenge the US Navy as a whole. If they want to give the US some serious strategic headaches, they just need to move towards parity of force in and around the South China Sea.

The area is becoming more tense to be sure. China making moves now makes sense. The US is war weary and they own a great deal of our debt. The next 2 years will be interesting to see what happens in the South China Sea.

The US should work with Japan to change the nature or Japan's Military and let Japan build an impressive Naval Fleet and Air Force. That should prove to be a nice little thorn in China's side.

Given the size of Japans territory and population in comparison to China (and its growing military), Japan is going to have to spend relatively enormous sums, for such change of nature of their military.

Well China will have beef with Japan, Taiwan, Philippines and Vietnam (maybe India).

So selling weapons to those countries could be a nice cash caw for the Military complex (to offset cutting the shit out of USA military spending).

I for one welcome our Chinese overloards, let them take over the world police role, let them solve the Syria issue.

China has actually made tremendous inroads into Africa, and they have been flexing their muscles in the South and East China seas as well as India, but a world police role is not one they are going to pursue. You can bet if they intercede in Syria, they will keep plenty of troops there after the situation is settled. China has a very real Imperialistic viewpoint now.

I wonder how China would feel if Mongolia made historical claims to Chinese land all the way up to the Wall?

Japan really wouldn't have to spend as much, remember they would still work in close cooperation with the US. Consider any Japanese Fleets to be extenstions of US fleets.
