    Mike Grella at Leeds United

Mike Grella gets the start today alongside Tresor Kandol (aka Treasure Candle if you're a Sky Sports presenter) against Accrington Stanley. Here's to hoping he can follow up on his last performance.

Uneventful start by Mike today as he comes off for Sam Vokes in the 2nd half.

Except for a nice pass here or there, Mike didn't get involved all that much from the radio account.

To amend my previous post, been reading some accounts from those that went to the match and it seems most feel that Mike was very bright in 1st half and were confused as to why he was taken off when he doesn't get many chances for a full 90 minutes.

With all the strikers at Leeds rumored to be on their way to other clubs in January, perhaps Grella can move up the depth chart.

After Jermaine Beckford's performance today against United its almost certain he will transfer to one of the higher leagues so there is a really good chance Grella will get more playing time in the 2nd half of the season

Newcastle has been rumored to be in for Beckford since last year.

I'm surprised Beckford's not worth more than £2M. Is his Leeds contract up soon?

    He'll be a freebie in June- so it's $2m for 6 months.

The interview on Sky Sports News with the Leeds manager after the game said that if they sell they need to have replacements lined up so it would appear they would bring in another striker.

Would his sale exceed the value of promotion?

Re: You can stand under my...Mike Grella at Leeds II [R]

I think both Newcastle and Leeds will get promoted regardless of a Beckford deal. Leeds and Newcastle are both currently eight points clear of 3rd place in their respective leagues, and Leeds has a game in hand. The sale would definitely make more sense from Leeds' standpoint, as they have alot of quality cover at forward, so better to get some money on Beckford than none.

Maybe Newcastle would look to have Beckford settle in the next six months, with an eye on signing him long-term in the summer to play with them in the EPL.

Re: You can stand under my...Mike Grella at Leeds II [R]

The interesting side story to Leeds defeating ManU was that, from all descriptions, they did not look outclassed, even in the second half when SAF brought out big guns.

And, to stretch this further, if Leeds is on par with an average Premiership team, shouldn't Grella - as a member of a club of such quality - get a bite at the USMNT?

This notion was considered a taboo based on the team's 3rd tier league status.

But if it's only temporary and Leeds shows to hold its own vs. the likes of ManU and Spurs ...

PS. I don't mean to start the discussion of where he'd fit with the US and so on... just on whether Leeds can be granted more respect based on what they had done so far in 2009-10.

Are they a different level than, let's say, Wycomb or MK Dons?

On any given day Leeds is as good as Manchester United.

This was a cup competition. Upsets happen in one-offs.

Re: You can stand under my...Mike Grella at Leeds II [R]

Absolutely a different level. The way I see it, league level is a fairly good indicator of a player's quality, but it's just one piece of information. The vast majority of League One players aren't good enough to play on the USMNT, but that's not grounds for automatically dismissing anyone for playing in League One.

Leeds are clearly a bit of an exception. For example, if Jermaine Beckford were American he would, without question, have been capped by now and would probably stand an excellent chance of making the World Cup squad. That said, Mike Grella is not Jermaine Beckford. He's more or less the fourth choice striker behind Beckford, Luciano Becchio, and Tresor Kandol. He's good, though, and is way better than a typical 3rd/4th striker in League One.

If Grella had another year of experience under his belt during this season, he may well have been in the NT picture. As it stands, he's just a little too raw, a little too undeveloped and needs more club playing time. If he signed with a Premiership club instead of Leeds, would he be getting any time or would he be doing the Arnoux/Peterlin reserves thing?

So basically, I give Leeds a lot of respect, but given the particulars of Grella's situation, it isn't quite enough, IMHO.

while Leeds did play a very good match and they hopefully get back to the EPL some time in the near future, a lot of their inspiration this weekend was partially due to the intense rivalry that has always occurred between both clubs.

as for mike, I hope he keeps getting opportunities with Leeds.

Yep. We see it every year. Barnsley beating Liverpool and Oldham beating Everton in 07-08 spring to mind.

Leeds is a championship caliber squad playing in League 1. And the gap between league 1 and the bottom half of the premiership is pretty miniscule.

Grella might get a look at the USMNT soon. But he's got to play. Just being on their roster doesn't mean much. How many starts has Mike made at Leeds? Five?

Let's hope that if Beckford leaves, Grella will get more of a chance to prove himself.
