His tax evasion case was (and settlement) stemmed from the fiscal year 2007. As far as anyone is aware, that is the only instance where Messi "evaded" tax payments. Now, his involvement in the "Panama Papers" means nothing more than the fact his father set up an off shore account. Seems to me, you're jumping the gun.
Never liked the Ji Sung Park dog chant, it's pretty racist but a lot of Korean players got that kind of chants in England before. I don't think it happens as often now though.
The guy is turning 29 this year... the whole ignorance excuse shouldn't apply anymore. I'm sure he knows what taxes are and what was being done by his father to evade them. He's a big boy. If the whole "I didn't know" excuse won't work for everyday people like us, why should it work for him? I mean, it's his money.
We aren't talking about an accountant who made his way to a nice dollar at his company. We are talking about an athlete that makes multi millions even without counting endorsements.
I agree that it is a cheap cop-out, the "I didn't know, I pay someone to handle this kind of stuff" excuse but I was simply refuting your comment about the number of times Messi has been "linked" to tax evasion charges. It happened once and the surfacing of the Panama Papers doesn't change that since the journalists that spent over a year sorting through those documents made it rather clear that not all the people named in this "scandal" are guilty of tax evasion.
You're right, it was once before. Bt still, theoretically, one successful conviction should be enough to land him jail time (because let's be honest, Messi's history makes him highly suspect), especially when dealing with so much money. Of course, we know how it'll play out if he's in fact proven guilty... he'll be given a chance to pay it all back and life will be good again. If the Spanish system want a head then it'll most likely be his dad who is sacrificed. Being a global icon has its perks I guess.
didnt Neymar also get charged with tax evasion recently? barfcelona players shady as fuk, pero juegan bonito so le las pasamos
People with the kind of money Messi has get plea deals, pay fines and go on with their lives. That's how this shit works. Pretty sure that's what happened with Mascherano.
How is he evading taxes? His dad set up an off shore company so he can charge for his sons appearance and likeness. As far as i know there is nothing illegal there.
The owning of an off shore company is not illegal but using it incorrectly is. No one's saying he's guilty for sure but if he is (and I'm sure the truth will come out eventually), he should face the consequences. Especially when Jorge Horacio Messi is not the most honourable person financially. Mossack Fonseca (law firm in question) released this statement: “For 40 years Mossack Fonseca has operated beyond reproach in our home country and in other jurisdictions where we have operations. Our firm has never been accused or charged in connection with criminal wrongdoing. However, we are legally and practically limited in our ability to regulate the use of the companies we incorporate or to which we provide other services. We are not involved in managing our clients’ companies,” the statement continued. “We regret any misuse of our services and actively take steps to prevent it.” Something smell fishy? I think so.
But how is he using it incorrectly? The leaks are out where it says the use was to sell his appearance and likeness..
Autism =\= ability to math. The theory I've heard is he's so good because he can focus entirely on one thing (football) and becomes frustrated if things don't go exactly how he wants, therefore he works the best he can to ensure that doesn't happen. Look at this duse
