So in re: Chivas' utter failure, here are Mexico's candidates to save face next year: Monterrey Tigres Santos Laguna Toluca Any of them inspire confidence? I'd go with rayados since at least they had 2012 - two wins and Tecatito having a global breakout game against Chelsea.
Monterrey is the only one I can see having a decent CWC run, followed by Santos As long as Tuca remains at Tigres, they’ll continue to be garbage internationally despite having good players And Toluca is just...meh
yeah these South American teams can be garbage too sometimes, I remember when Atletico Mineiro lost to a team from Morocco or something like that, Atletico Nacional lost to Kashima as well, now River Plate shits the bed Maybe Monterrey can do something in the next cup but I wouldn't hold my breath
If there's a sure thing in mexican futbol it's that the team representing the league in the CWC will blow it. One of the regio teams have the best shot. Maybe Titeres without Tuca. That won't happen.
The difference being that this will be only the 4th time out of 13th that a CONMEBOL team won't be in the FINAL. Meanwhile we have only 2 out of 13th 3rd place. And of course a big fat 0 finals.
That third place stat is pretty misleading though considering that there were an additional 3 times that they lost the third place game on penalties. If we are discussing quality of play then the arbitrary penalties decider is irrelevant. Add in the fact that this thing is always held in the Eastern hemisphere and much of the differences come out in the wash. I'm not really sure what spazzo argument you are serving as a counterweight to, but based on the eye test I'd say that generally the best of Asia and Africa would usually be bottom half of liguilla quality. So when we send a team that is not liguilla level (Chivas), results like this are not surprising.

We can confirm that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018/19 season. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, together with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna. #MUFC— Manchester United (@ManUtd) December 19, 2018
