My argument has nothing at all to do with Monchi or Dzeko performance in Serie A. Hell, I don't care if Dzeko only plays in the CL for the rest of his time here. Dzeko performance in the CL the last 2 years has netted Roma probably close to 100 mil (depending on how we do vs Porto). I see no evidence at all that Dzeko cannot perform the same next season in the CL. Keeping Dzeko for the CL increases Roma's odds of getting out of the group and beyond meaning 10's of millions of dollars in Roma coffers, likely much more than they'll get selling him. IMO, keeping Dzeko makes good financial sense.
That can be deceiving. I'm not saying it's not true but unless you look at who each club has played, 7 games isn't a lot of data points. I mean, the last 2 games we have played 2 of the worst teams in the league.
The average #xG and #xG conceded per match for the top 6 teams in #SerieA #Juventus - 1.98 / .81 (+ 1.17)#Napoli - 1.83 / .88 (+ .95)#Inter - 1.60 / 1.01 (+ .59)#ACMilan 1.38 / 0.99 (+ .39)#Roma 1.87 / 1.41 (+ .46)#Lazio 1.60 / 1.09 (+ .51)#Atalanta 1.90 / 1.61 (+ .29)— Joey Palmieri (@PalmsyJ) February 20, 2019
I've eased off my criticism of Kolarov once I found out about his foot. That can't be easy to deal with and it's bloody impressive he's been able to play as much as he has this season.
yea, I wasn't really directing it at you.. just saying stats can be deceiving. Our play has been up and down. The one match in the last 7 that really hurts is ACM. We should have won that one.
Ok, 3 simple points to respond to that: 1) Alisson heroics contributed as much to last year CL run, if not more. Yet we sold him. 2) You need to make it to CL first in order to make money. As it stands now we are at risk of missing it. Dzeko is part of the problem. 3) More importantly, things always regress to the mean. In over 15 year career, Dzeko has scored more than 5 goals in Europe only twice. And he is not getting any younger or fitter. If Monchi can't get a striker who can score more than 5 goals in Europe then why the hell does he still have a job?
What? Alisson was not nearly as good as Dzeko in CL. Neutrals were calling him overrated because they only saw his CL games which were not amazing.
There is no objective metric to accurately measure players contribution in a team sport, that's why these discussions end up being circular. But for the sake of argument, without Alisson out-of-this-world form against Atletico at home and away to Shakhtar Roma would have not made it that far with or without Dzeko goals.
