I would suggest some of the reaction has to do with the “act like you’ve been there before” aspect of sports behavior...Thailand hasn’t had a glorious history of women’s soccer domination and possibly could be forgiven for getting a little excited about qualifying for a WC or trying to get on a roll before the WC. The US doesn’t need to boost its confidence with a high scoring game, doesn’t need to enjoy a rare blowout or bask in the one highlight of their program’s history. They are the epitome of “been there before” and if any team would be expected to “act like you’ve been there before” it would be them. Doesn’t mean they have to, and it wasn’t a crime against humanity...they had a chance to show everybody ‘something’, and they did, or didn’t, depending on your perspective.
