Seems like a harsh call. The only thing I can offer is sometimes being too close to a play distorts one's perspective.

Four months is particularly lenient given the summer and pre-season.

He'll return end of October/November and miss 9 intl matches. Thought it would be more, but 10 match ban from previous instance was about 2 months. Also, since he is banned from all activity, can he sign a new contract if he's transferred?

He got off easy. Should be to the end of the year at least. Hope they don't appeal.

Luis Suarez has now been banned for 34 games since 2010 without receiving a single red card.

Will be interesting if he can be transferred in the period.

    A wrist slap. Revolting.

Several MLS players just grabbed their to-do lists, scratched out "25", and replaced it with "34" with a circle around it

Apparently I'm way better at predicting discipline than guessing referee appointments. Nailed the fine, off by 1 game... though I did get the start of the domestic season question wrong.

I don't think this is a wrist slap. It's the longest punishment ever for an on-field action not directed at a match official. Remember, if Uruguay doesn't advance, those 9 games are going to last awhile. He probably doesn't see national team duty for at least a year, if not longer (no idea how many friendlies Uruguay will schedule in 2015). And he can't do anything for Liverpool for several months. This is a pretty strong punishment.

I realize some people are going to want him banned for life or something just as draconian, but as I said before, I think that's absurd. We've had deliberate elbows that have fractured people's skulls. A bite is maniacal in a lot of ways, but unless we're banning people for life when the elbow someone in a manner that can kill, we have to step back and have some overall perspective on the bite. I'm perfectly fine with this punishment (provided, of course, there's no appeal and no suspending of the sentence in a few weeks)

There were others missed, particularly before Balotelli retaliated, where he was closer. He was grossly incompetent in my opinion. I'm interested in seeing/hearing if he gets another match. I doubt it. I think that would be very telling.

No word at the moment, at least as far as I have read.

Harsher punishment then I expected, is that 9 world cup games? if so he is out of the next WC which means he might not play in another WC

He only has himself to blame

Can't believe there has been this much debate. Of course it was SFP.

I applaud this. Still wish it had been at least six months, but this is the most severe penalty FIFA has imposed for an on field play.

Wouldn't the match ban only concern official non-friendly games?

Grossly incompetent is not a fair assessment. He is a well qualified, successful referee.

    Poor game? Sure.

But this is not a forum to complain because you don't like the referee. I've not gone to your team forum to defend him, as it's not my place. That type of rhetoric does not belong here.

I would be surprised if he got another game, and I said as much earlier in the thread. But the RC he gave is not the reason. The RC he didn't give Suarez absolutely could cost him. But missing a bite is understandable to a point...it's just not something you see.

The ban is from "official matches".

    From FIFA:

"The player Luis Suárez is to be suspended for nine (9) official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup™ fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on 28 June 2014. The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay’s next FIFA World Cup match(es), as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team’s subsequent official matches in accordance with art. 38 par. 2a) of the FDC."

Yep. His ban will cover Copa America and probably the first few World Cup qualifiers.
