Luongo is getting his first team debut for Tottenham Hotspur at the moment. On as a substitute in the 71 minute replacing Brazilian international Sandro, against Stoke City in the Carling Cup. Born 25th september 1992, he'll be 19 years old in a few days.
Good to hear! His name has been around for a while, its good to see he has finally gotten some game time, especially for a club the size of Spurs. Aside from the missed pen, how did he look?
Sadly not possible for me to follow the team away these days, and it was not on tv anywhere so couldn't say how well he did. There were perhaps too many kids in the midfield when he came on though, making it difficult to cope against senior opponents. Spurs is taking part of the new Nextgen series in Europe, a tournament that aspire to be the Champions League of youth teams. And Tottenham Hotspur are among the top performing teams so far in its first season. Luongo have been a key player so far and captain the side, having beaten Inter Milan 7-1 despite being down to 10 men for 50 minutes. And the other day PSV was beaten away 2-1, highlights can be seen on youtube, with Luongo hitting the post early on. Captain Luongo and the Spurs U19 side continue to dominate the Nextgen series, with a 4-1 victory against PSV. Will be interesting to see how far the team goes, wouldn't rule out tv coverage at some point in the tournament. http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/nextgen-latest-191011.html "Massimo Luongo - arguably the pick of the team - broke forward from midfield before releasing Coulibaly, who was upended in the box." http://www.nextgenseries.com/en/Fix...h-Reports/10/191011-Spurs-v-PSV/555x312/1.jpg
Made an appearance today in the squad to play Liverpool, but was an unused sub. Steeping the right direction though
After a loan spell at Ipswich, he's now at Swindon. http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1149742/Luongo-has-Wembley-in-his-sights
Can anyone explain why he doesn't seem to ever get called up for Aussie youth teams? Most Spurs fans who are knowledgeable with our academy and have seen him for years will say he's one of the better youth players we have, and we've had one of the best youth setups in the country recently. Odd..... Anyway, I was reading this article about him and it came to mind. Aussie youngster Luongo: I’m in awe of Tottenham teammate Bale Tottenham Hotspur Prospect Rankings, #9: Massimo Luongo Massimo Luongo - Player profile - transfermarkt.de: This bloke has him at #9, I'd put him a bit higher (his rankings are weird in general). Actually we have two highly rated Australians, the other being Giancarlo Gallifuoco. Tottenham Hotspur Prospect Rankings, #15: Giancarlo Gallifuoco Giancarlo Gallifuoco - Player profile - transfermarkt.de: http://instagram.com/giange94 If it couldn't be more obvious by his last name Gallifuoco is eligible for Italy.
Yeah I wasn't sure, I thought I remember hearing he was eligible for Italy. I think Australia needs both far more than Italy. The Azzurri aren't set in that position but they have Marrone and not a DM but Verratti plays deep. There's a chance Luongo would be good enough to play when you look at other CM/DM's Italy have, besides Marrone and maybe someone like Viviani there's not much quality depth at that level.
both players have represented Australia at underage levels. Luongo has been to training camps with our U-20's in the past and apparently didn't impress(this was back in 2010) but he's improved a tonne since then, much better player now. If he plays regularly next season even if its on loan he might get a call up to the seniors Gallifuoco was one of our best players for our U-17 team not so long ago but fell off the radar when he left for Europe. Has a lot of talent for sure though.
This article is a bit more in depth about his time over the past couple of years or so. The fact that there has been no contact since then is worrying. Not so much because it seems like we're going to lose him, but because this guy obviously has a decent amount of talent & has already made an appearance for Spurs in a cup game. I'd have thought the FFA would keep in contact with our talented youngsters regardless of whether they're eligible to represent another country or not (Massimo is eligible to represent Indonesia as well as Italy if I remember correctly).
Not sure if you guys are aware he had a wild day at the end of his loan at Swindon in the League 1 playoff final. He scored a great goal to put Swindon up in the 70th minute, great scenes. Then in the 90th minute he made a rash challenge inside the box and conceded a penalty which allowed Brentford to equalize. He does seem to be a very unlucky boy, he was probably their best player in that match. I had highlights of the match but I can't find them now. Not sure what will happen with him next season. He'll likely go out on loan, I think he played well enough in the back end to warrant another loan and more playing time. Probably back to the Championship, again he was unlucky to be at Ipswich during a manager change and young players sometimes get sent back to their clubs by the incoming manager.
Luongo will have a full season on loan with Swindon Town in League One next season. Perhaps a division below where he should be, but at least it will be a lot of game time and experience that is essential at this stage of his development. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23144892 His first game might be against parent club Spurs, as the two teams face eachother in a friendly 16th of july.
Yep and the manager clearly wants him which has been an issue with Spurs loans the past 3 years. Not many have gone well because managers essentially loan our players as depth.
http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/massimo-to-swindon-310813/ Swindon Town has signed Luongo on a permanent deal, £400.000, after a great start to his and their season.
Shame but he had a lot of competition come into the club, I wouldn't be surprised if he asked for this. One more thing, I wouldn't be surprised if he has a buy back clause. Swindon are sort of Spurs secret B-team, there's a chance he might have been signed permanently so that we can send another player down there on loan.
Crazy goal from Mass, not sure he meant it but it counts. Swindon have a bunch of Spurs that are too good for that level. Started shaky but I wouldn't be surprised to see them really go on a run once the players start to get more settled.
Missed out on promotion to the other two Aussies: Read more at http://www.socceroos.com.au/article.../i73djt5whl41xunrx53z9cps#m0rGEDD12SiOKFIt.99
He's moved to QPR in the off-season and by all reports playing well for them. QPR are in the Championship this season, and are a club looking to return to the EPL sooner rather than later.
