the only person who has made an definitive argument against a Defoe signing is @johno who pointed out the youth angle. no one is saying he would be our dream signing. but he would be a perfect option as a pure backup 3rd option.
We have to shoot a lot higher than Defoe. Spend what it takes to bring in a top 9 and allow Defoe to age gracefully with a mid/bottom table club.
Not quite. Defoe has scored 30 league goals in the past 2 seasons with Sunderland. He's signed with Bournemouth, so it's a moot point, but it would not be a bad thing at all to have someone like him as a viable option alongside our new 9 and Rashford. He'd offer the team something different also, in terms of style, which is also a good thing. For a team like us, which struggled to score goals, adding another scorer would seem like a good idea. We should be so lucky if Rooney had performed half as well as Defoe has.

Confident the club paid for his operation, his trip to the US. They've surely done their part. He's going to be out for the next 6mos minimum and when he comes back, he may not be the same player. This is still a business, not a charity...
This is anything but cavalier. I appreciate the "Keep Ibra" argument but the reality of the situation has to be acknowledged. And the sum of all the relevant factors -- his age, coming of an ACL injury, the future of the club but also, yes, his brilliance when he was fit -- points to letting him go as the best decision. It could well be that Ibra remains out of contract when January comes around and if that's the case maybe, just maybe, Mourinho brings Ibra back for the second half of the season. Especially if we've got serious EPL and CL rsun going, it wouldn't be bad a thing at all to have a sub of Ibra's quality. But as of this moment, it's the right decision to let Ibra go and wish him well.
breaking news says Zlatan has been released though i suppose he could still sign a new pay to play as free agent
Of course Ibra would remain at Carrington to complete his rehabilitation. There's no better place for him right to mend his body and keep his skills sharp than under Jose's supervision. It was the right, and easy, decision to not extend his contract. If by November or so Ibra demonstrates animal instincts in training, well, it's not hard to imagine Mourinho giving him a half season to see us through to bringing in more trophies. Ibra doesn't come across as a quitter and I suspect he understands the club's decision and what he must do to have a shot a top level action again and the only club he'll ever have a shot at top level action again is United. We shall see.
Him sticking around is not the worst thing. And if he's allowed to stay at the club, perhaps it's with the understanding he could be signed in January once he recovers. Hard to think he may have something to contribute, even in a reduced role towards the end of the season. As much as Raiola tried to make it sound like there options aplenty for him, he's probably got no other choice in reality.
I had assumed he would explore options for rehabilitation elsewhere. Like somewhere with sun. No problem with him sticking around providing he is not an unwelcome distraction.

I mean it in the sense both are old and shyte and we don't need either as some as suggesting we should have considered Defoe.
no. regarding Zlatan's recovery the club has a basic duty to help with that as he was injured while under contract with us so it makes sense he'd stick around and complete it there. maybe this is a way to gauge his recovery too witha revised contract in mind. who knows
Happy we have done the only sensible thing. No point going over the debate on his playing style and conversion stuff again, as has been debated to death. However is easy to forget what a low ebb the club was at when he joined and how he gave the players, club, team and fans some swagger back. Think he has had a positive effect on the likes of Rash, Lingard and Pogs etc. in terms of professionalism, belief and attitude. Winner.
We shouldn't beat around the bush: without him this season, we never would have accomplished the goals we set out to do (which were getting back to the CL and win a trophy or two in the process). Regardless of what one may think about his style and how it might have impeded the team overall, the bottom line remains that he was vital and for the most part, has done his job. Sad to see him (and what he represented this season, personality and mentality wise) go. Still like to think that the book on him may not be completely shut and if he's not signed with another club by the time he's recovered, he could be offered a short term contract with the club, especially if the club is in a good situation (in terms of winning things) by the time he's ready to return. The prospect of possibly winning a league title in England (and who knows where we could be in the CL), with United could be appealing to him (unfinished business).
