He's an '04 forward who's listed as American on the DFB's official site and FuPa. Furthermore, I can confirm from his IG story that he is eligible for the US, Germany, and Ivory Coast. It's likely he was born in the US and raised in Germany. His father is former Ivorian international Boubacar Sanogo, who played a number of seasons in Germany. Transfermarkt doesn't list US nationality but does mention he's the son of Boubacar. He was also in Germany U16 camp last month, along with another US-eligible forward, 1860 Munich's Mansour Ouro-Tagba. FuPa: https://www.fupa.net/spieler/malick-sanogo-1527425.html DFB: https://www.dfb.de/datencenter/personen/malick-sanogo/spieler Transfermarkt: https://www.transfermarkt.com.mt/malick-sanogo/profil/spieler/692736 According to FuPa, he has 9 goals in 743 minutes dating back to last year at various youth levels. He's currently in U17 Bundesliga with Union Berlin.
1st one to note that he's American eligible was me in the detective thread. he seems to be born in New York City according to TM. not sure he's eligible for Germany though, takes ages to become eligible for Germany and seems like someone who talked to him directly on instagram said that he told him that he doesn't have a German passport yet. That he talked to Prus (U16 coach) for an hour during the camp but it does seem like based on these things that Germany is his preference. even though most of his father's career was in Germany, he never stayed long enough consecutively. Like he played 4 years, then left and cameback like 3 years later, then left again and then cameback. Given his father being all over the place it makes sense if he's not eligible as of now.
If he doesn't have a German passport how is he playing over there at all? He's 15 or did he just turn 16?
I'm not extremely in tune with the eligibility of underage players. But isn't that whole thing about people who move to the country for footballing reasons? there are a lot of players from Africa and even places like Syria/Afghanistan who don't have German passport and have been playing in Germany for years and years in the youth levels. Should those kids not be allowed to play until they live in the country for 8+ years? A lot of people see football in Germany as a good way to integrate people. I mean Sanogo has been in Germany for awhile too, from TM in Youth Teams. Werder Bremen, FC Energie Cottbus, 1.FC Union Berlin
Well, he was raised in Germany while his dad played there. From 2005-2009, dad played in Germany and then a season in France and 2 more in Germany before going on an international adventure that was probably best without the family tagging along (UAE, India, Indonesia). He returned for a final season in Germany in 2017-18. Would have made sense to leave the family in one place while he traveled the world. After about 5 years, you can qualify for a permanent residency permit for Germany. I couldn't find anything about Malick's mom, so it's possible she has EU citizenship or residency.
There are some exceptions for foreign underage players The player is moving for humanitarian reasons without his parents The player is an exchange student undertaking an academic programme abroad Player is registering for the first time and has lived continuously for the last five years in the country of intended registration prior to this request Both player and club are within 50km of their common borders and the distance between the two is less than 100km The player is over 16 and is moving within the territory of the EU/EEA The player is moving for humanitarian reasons with his parents The parents of the player moved for reasons not linked to football In detail: https://resources.fifa.com/image/up...uide-2930706.pdf?cloudid=uof9ezgxs7tyyoffen0f
today his papa Boubacar Sanogo has been hired by Union Berlin to work individually with all the youth strikers in their Academy, which obviously includes his son.
Wow... impressive start to the season for him. Have to admit that I had never heard of him. Seems like a long-shot to play for the US... seems destined for the Ivory Coast considering his father and all. US needs to poach.
one has to remember that Nord/Nordost is usually the weakest league of the 3. And that from what I've seen Malick has that physicality edge already. Will that matter in a few years maybe or maybe not. as for International although doesn't seem eligible for Germany yet that he went to a camp and talked to the coach for an hour does open that as a 3rd option. Seems like he could be eligible 2020/early 2021. From what I've noticed about vast majority of duals who are African eligible, they usually go for that route for senior NT and not youth NT. I don't blame them, kids might not be as keen to travel to Africa to play games. who knows from his 2+1 options how he would rank them in terms of preference. but it's cool that his dad gets to train him at the club as well as his competition. Union Berlin doesn't have a II team and barely promotes players to the 1st team. They hope in future they can change that though.
Sanogo played 27 min for for Union U21 in Baltic Sea Cup 3-2 win over Aalborg BK. No goals/assists for him.
He started in Baltic Sea Cup. He gave the "Future USMNT" account a shoutout in his IG story today. The US may not be his first choice but he is likely at least open.
I mean it's very rare for a dual (barring someone like Toljan) to close any door. The real International question is where does the USA stand in his preference as a future triple national? how much influence does his father (who also trains him) have as well? One can't forget that his dad was ex Ivory Coast International player and seems like his whole family could be from Ivory Coast too.
scored a double today in a 3-3 draw vs Cottbus U17 to take tally to 13th for the season. Doesn't have physicality deficits which helps playing vs older players.
looks like he scored and assisted once today in a 2-0 win. his tally seems to be 14 goals and 6 assists in 19 games. also 2nd half of season 4 goals and 4 assists in 3 games
so its 15 goals and 7 assists, but in the end what he does in U19 is more important than anything in U17. Especially for a team like Union with no II team.
This was posted about in the youth national team forum but there's been multiple recent IG stories of his suggesting he was invited to the March US U17 camp that was eventually cancelled due to COVID-19.
