Loved following Josh is Italy, but @bungadiri, shouldn’t we move this to the USL forum?

And it would be Scotland without some trash talking about prospects:

Could have a trio of Yanks at Dundee United with Ian Harkes and Dillon Powers already there.

What a fall. In about 2 yrs he goes from a seeming breakthrough with a big club in Serie A, to a 3rd division.

If he's going to make it anywhere, one would think it's in a hispanic-style system like Spain or Mexico.

W/ confidence you could see him back-dooring a career in a respectable league like the Segunda ala Shaq Moore. He's not a physical force, & is a borderline lilliputian, but has some quicks, skill, + creative football brain. Needs to regain the love & belief.

He's just too small. Salvadorean genes.

Maradona was 5'5. Messi is 5'7. Perez is 5'5. Small, but could still be useful as a wingback. Height isn't everything in soccer.

Hasn't stopped the likes of Insigne. Quicks and brain can override the size issues. He needs to be better than decent in those areas going fw though. Choking technically on his chances w/ LAFC was more the problem than anything.

Beat me to it. I just looked it up. So there is some upside, though it's out of his control. Going to be poised on a knife edge.

Being Messi-Maradonna small is a positive advantage in soccer: a low centre of gravity makes you a lot harder to knock off the ball, which is one reason why Maradonna and Messi were such incredibly effective dribblers.

Yes - first playoff game will be in about a week. The good news about winning the group is CD Castellon will have a second chance at promotion (if they fail to promote directly in the group winners round of the playoffs).

Being small is more of a disadvantage than advantage in football. It takes more steps to get by a defender off the dribble. You need very good close control and anticipation to turn that into a positive. Poorer long speed on average and ball-winning. Of course hard to win anything in the air. 4 of the 11 positions are typically for players who are taller than 95% of the general public. Just, unlike basketball, freakishly tall people don't have much of a place, and you can still realistically overcome being particularly short.

Puyol is 5'10 while Cannavaro is 5'9 but probably exception to the rule. I doubt Germans or English would ever use a 5'9 centerback even if world-class

Lol at bringing up height of some of the best players in the world.

josh isn’t skilled like them.. he could use the extra size.
Fact is, he’s not very good and rumors of partying a lot.

Right. If he had a growth spurt, he'd be playing somewhere better than Spanish third tier.

I wasn’t planning to reply until @frankburgers graciously provided his two cents.

I try not to bash players for any reason, although I admit Yedlin has been a frequent object of my scorn. But in Josh’s case, I have an, unfounded by any scientific evidence, opinion that Josh was on an upward trajectory until two things happened: he started posting about his new girlfriend and Tab left him off the U-20 WC roster. Neither action am I forwarding as any sort of justification for his decline, but it irks me to no end that certain trolls take undue satisfaction in berating American footballers who didn’t reach their potential.

edit: this is partially in response to @LouisianaViking07/09 ’s earlier question: what happened? I would only posit that sometimes we, as fans, or certain influential family members, want it more than the players do. Don’t really see that as a reason for hating on them

Josh is barely 22 years old. He might no longer be the prospect he once was but he still has time to become a decent pro soccer player.

Lol oh come on. It matter nil to me that Perez didn’t turn into a good pro. He’s in a long line of other youth players who look good at 16/17 and never amount to anything. That’s life. We then, as fans, look at the next crop of 16/17 year olds and wait for the breakthroughs and the flops. The fact is, he had a lot of off the field rumors that couldn’t make up for his lack of ability. Good luck to the player in 3 liga!
