Former New York Red Bull homegrown midfielder Mael Corboz is currently trialing with German 3rd Liga team MSV Duisburg.

Corboz, who is currently under contract with United Soccer League team Wilmington Hammerheads, played the final 30 minutes in Duisburg's pre-season warm-up match against seventh-tier club DJK St. Tönis, a 15-0 victory.

He's another of our massive roster of Alabama-born players, but also has a French passport.

His sister Daphne plays for Manchester City and has been a key player for the USWNT U23s.

He seems to be having a good season for Wilmington--is getting goals and assists pretty regularly.

    No transfer for Corboz.

    Translation:

CANCELLED: Testers Mael Corboz, who left a good impression in training camp will not be transferred in this season. The 21-year-old professional from the Wilmington Hammerheads mixed nearly two weeks at the zebras, but is due to the oversupply in midfield currently not an issue. "We keep Mael but for the following season in mind, because it is a promising man," President Ingo Wald. W

It seems that Duisburg is still having some trouble making up their minds about whether or not to sign Corboz as of yesterday.

"Die Entscheidung über eine Verpflichtung des 21-Jährigen soll bis Anfang nächster Woche fallen."

In other words, they'll decide early next week.

It also seems as though there is a behind-the-scenes ($$) connection between Duisburg and Corboz's current club Wilmington. The current owner/chairman of Wilmington, George Altirs, is also the CEO of the New York-based Capelli Group, which became a minority investor/shareholder in Duisburg in late-2015.

At some point, he went back to the US, but he's training with Duisburg again. The article suggests that he may join the club officially over the winter break instead.

It turns out that a company called Capelli NY has a stake in both the Wilmington Hammerheads and MSV Duisburg. Interesting.

Corboz made the bench for the first time today. 0-0 early in the first half at the moment.

Duisberg is in first place in the 3. bundesliga at the break, so have a good shot at promotion. But Corboz has yet to play a match yet.

MSV Duisburg won the 3. Liga and have been promoted. Corboz didn't get in any league games, though Transfermarkt says he made four appearances in the regional cup in which Duisburg participates.

Corboz has one more year on his contract.

The August 5th match is the only competitive one out of the bunch. The others are friendlies.

Corboz has made the bench five time in the 1.5 years he's been at Duisburg and has zero appearances. Duisburg also disbanded their reserve team the same summer they acquired Corboz, so he hasn't played in any games at any level since he was with the Wilmington Hammerheads in the 2016 USL.

A move elsewhere certainly would make sense.

Also, continuing to collect a paycheck would make sense.

This guy is unlikely to play at a level higher than USL/Danish 2nd tier, so making the most of his 2BL opportunity makes sense to me.

2 interesting things from that article:

    1. He is already training with CZ Jena (other sites confirmed it too).

    2. It claims that he was considered "one of the biggest talents in US soccer" at the time of his signing. Apparently he has the same publicity agent as that Shaq kid at Levante...

He only has six months left on his contract. Duisburg also signed him as a flyer for the back end of the roster when they were in the 3. Liga, so I can't imagine he's in a Winston Bogarde type situation with his contract.

I don't read too much into that. They were in the third division when they signed him, so why not make it sound exciting? And he was certainly considered an MLS prospect, potentially a relatively high pick, out of school -- though he ended up signing HG (and didn't make the team). It all sounds pretty boilerplate to me.
