Guaranteed a playoff spot, but Sunderland are 4 points off the automatic promotion spot with a game in hand and 3 to play, so I don't think they'll be throwing the towel in just yet.

They play Portsmouth this weekend, and can leapfrog them to 3rd with a W, then close with #12 Fleetwood (not a lot to play for) and #19 Southen (may be fighting for survival).

Hasn't really played well the last two months. Missed a bit of time with minor injuires, might be adjusting to life with a baby in the house, but something isn't right. Effort is still there, but the production hasn't been. Really struggled today. Would love to see him find his game again.

That's a strangely named sponsor. I would have expected them to be a women's wear store, at least, if not a lingerie store. :)

Sunderland lost to Fleetwood today. They have really screwed it up.

Gooch had an ok pass or two in the first half. Sunderland doesn’t appear to care all that much about this game.

he didn't do much can can't really complain about his sub tbh. sunerland not looking very threatening right now and their recent form suggests they'll bow out of the playoffs pretty quickly

He stepped up on the big occasion. Good to see. As the cliche has it "form is temporary, class is permanent."

On the bench for the second leg of the League One promotion semifinal at Portsmouth. 10 minutes in, already testy. 1-0 Sunderland on aggregate, 0-0 today.

If these are really the 4th and 5th-best this league has to offer, then WOOF. This shit barely resembles soccer - much closer to Greco-Roman wrestling. Or Roman gladiatorial combat, if you prefer.

Anyway, Gooch was lively. Often used as an outlet once he came on, held the ball well, dribbled well. He didn't create much, but given that this tie finished 1-0 over 180 minutes (and today, there were 17 shot attempts, combined, only 5 of which ended up on target), no one else really did either.

Sunderland will play the winner of Doncaster Rovers/Charlton Athletic (their second leg is tomorrow) in a Wembley final on May 26.
