Gooch has three assists in his career. The majority of his league appearances have come in League One or the Conference. The reason he hasn't established himself is three-fold: 1) A club in a relegation battle usually isn't going to entrust a starting position to a young player. 2) Gooch might be fast and tenacious, but his technical quality is seriously lacking. 3) The injury didn't help his cause.
Same. Like, I wish him all the best and hope he has a good, productive career, but I'd be surprised if he has any more impact at the international level than someone like Brad Davis.
He was never an established starter at Sunderland. I do not think much of what you attribute to him is reality. He is very fast and he is relentless, but seldom produces anything of note. I want him to be good, but too often, he follows a good move with a WTF move. I would not be surprised at all if it turns out C'ship is his level.
As if the minutes he is getting is impressive at 21? 21 is not that young. He is barely playing at all. He barely played in the Premiership and he is barely playing in the championship. He recently took advantage of his league cup opportunity and maybe he can parlay that into more time in the league but to act like his career was not doing anything but sputtering before yesterday would incorrect. This myopic view that "Oh he is on the books at Sunderland therefore he is automatically better than someone at Seattle" is just so dense it is incredible someone believes it.
He was making regular appearances in the Prem as a 20-year old and earned his way to a cap before getting injured. It looks like he's rounding back into form. It should be interesting to watch him continue to grow as a player.
His Sunderland "Prem" team was one of the worst in history. I do hope he continues to grow and becomes a good player. He has an interesting set of skill, very American.
I thing the truth lies comfortably between these two viewpoints. We shouldn't be calling him into the NT anytime soon but I think he's an interesting piece moving forward who actually has some upside. High work rate/speed/physicality, solid right foot, decent touch. I think he's a rich man's Bedoya instead of a Brad Evans personally.
Thanks for pointing that out. Gooch is primed for more minutes. This year should be a good one for him. He's poised to make a much bigger impact.
Sure he is one to watch moving forward. The problem is one poster is trying to elevate him because "He played in the prem" which is a nice thing to say but it does not by itself mean he is some can't miss national team player. When he was getting some EPL minutes he was called in. He has hardly played 1st team minutes at all since last fall. Let him establish himself as a professional player before you (that poster) start acting as if it is some crime he is not being called in/Jordan Morris is being called in instead.
Sunderland is not >>> than anyone. Have you watched them play over the past few years? If so, I feel bad for you.
Such open enmity exists for Gooch and Sunderland here. It will be fun watching whether or not he continues to brush off the haters.
Just objectivity. Gooch is an interesting if unaccomplished prospect, and Sunderland is a ********ing dumpster fire.
There are no haters in here. Everyone wants to see him do well. You are the one who came in and started incorrectly elevating him and acting like he walked on water because he played in the premier league a handful of times. Others have pointed out that what he has accomplished has not been all that impressive and certainly does not make him a lock to be with the USMNT. It's not "hating" it is an objective analysis. You are 1) bagging on other players 2) incorrectly elevating someone simply based off the club they *play at which is incredibly myopic. *rarely plays/plays very few minutes.
I am impressed by his play, and the level he has done it at. In my opinion, he is one of the top young attacking prospects in the US pool and given health and regular minutes, I would certainly rank him above the MLS contingen including Zardes, Bedoya, and Morris. This is a skilled, motivated player at Sunderland. If he remains healthy, i fully expect him to claim an extended role and to continue to generate chances. If he does that, he'll be on the field for club and country.
