Starts in a friendly: 📝 Simon Grayson has named his first starting XI as #SAFC kick-off their pre-season tonight v @buryfcofficial pic.twitter.com/UViE0AJPSB— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) July 7, 2017
Quotes from people who watched him yesterday: -He played down the middle tonight on his own mind and was lost imho. Needs a target man to play off or needs to move out wide. - Having been at the game...I am afraid that Gooch, Honeyman and Greenwood looked distinctly average and in my opinion are not good enough. -Worst game Honeyman has had for us, Greenwood and Gooch did nout too And this was kinda funny, because he does play this way: -Saw gooch against Porto for under 23s and he just looks like a little roid head.
Here are the highlights. Gooch played the #9, striker, interesting. Plenty of him in the highlights but never with the ball...if that makes sense. https://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2017/july/bury/highlights-bury-v-sunderland

Hasn't been in the last couple of Sunderland friendlies. Article on his prospects at Sunderland: https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/20...-season-could-mean-for-our-american-youngster He may have a stocky, muscular build but he is deceptively fast, and he certainly used his pace in the few opportunities he had in the Premier League last season, both in an attacking sense and defensively too. He regularly attempted to beat the full-back for pace last year when in possession, and when out of possession he harried and pressed opponents to try to force them into mistakes. He may sometimes be too forceful in his attempts to win possession back (he picked up a yellow in each of his first three Premier League appearances) but his style of play certainly endears him to the Sunderland crowd.
A colleague who is a big (English) Sunderland fan is bullish on Gooch's prospects for this season. (Also he really likes Claudio Reyna.) So there's that!
On the bench for the season's opener: 📝 Here's your #SAFC line-up ahead of tonight's 2017-18 opener v @dcfcofficial pic.twitter.com/kSeYXoJC0F— Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) August 4, 2017
In a world menaced by change and constant uncertainty we seek stability; to anchor ourselves to the eternal verities and our timeless traditions. Thus, we look to Sunderland, secure in the knowledge that this cesspool of dysfunction, this rest home for the maladjusted millionaire footballing under-performer will forever supply us with off-the-pitch snafus to enchant connisseurs of sporting trainwrecks. And so it was, that highly-paid midfielder Darron Gibson was caught on camera giving an expletive-filled (and definitely alcohol-fuelled) assessment of several Sunderland players. The words "f*&king" and "shit" tended to be located rather close to each other when used, which was rather often. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ibson-sunderland-shit-team-mates-championship Since Gibson made only 15 appearances last season, you'd wonder if he includes himself in that assessment. The silver lining is that a reasonably good player with a first-class attitude could find himself the mainstay of the ultimate big-team club that's fallen on hard times. Since the fans will be desperate for anything positive to get behind, he could wind up being a fan favourite who gets a lot of positive attention pretty fast. An offer could follow at the end of the season.

He was decent during his time playing left mid. A nice run from midfield into the box but no final ideas; a very nice 30 yd diagonal cross field pass that led to a shot. He showed his usual terrier-style defense that seems like a good fit for the Championship.
