For the last week I was feeling very forgiving about the rapids flushing the season away. I thought more about the good memories that I've had at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. I think this rumor was the root of it.
Well, we know how the RFO handles the winter break so really this is their final window before 2018...
Given who quick Montes re-signed (as reported by ESPNFC), I think once again Rapids were a get more money leverage. It seems the Mexico players have perfected using the Rapids for this.
Could it have gone the other way? Leon FO: "Sign the contract, or we'll set it up so your only other option is to sign with the Colorado Rapids. Have fun begging for service from 25 yards away."
It's a shame. If he had come to Colorado, I would have been waiting for the first time he received a YC, and then a mustard-and-ketchup . . . because that would have made him a 3-Card-Monte.
Even though I know the Rapids have their acquisition issues, I can't imagine their scouting eggs were all in the Montes basket. Verbal-only agreement for $3 mil, dealing with Ligia MX, shopping yourself to other clubs for leverage being a common practice... no way Smith and Co. we're just looking here. But then I look at last off season.

So if the article is accurate, and no contract was offered, It's kind of hard to pack this as a realistic summer-window move for the Rapids. Something else in the works perhaps. I suppose Johansson is still a viable move, though no doubt other teams would be interested.
Haven't we seen the "Mexican National Team Player fall through for a USMNT player who was our first choice all along" story before?
