Lollapalooza is back. This year: Jane's Addiction Audioslave Incubus Queens of the Stone Age Jurassic Five Will hit most major metropolitan US areas. Dates/specific venues TBA. I could live without Incubus, but Jane's Addiction and QOTSA are killer live, and I look forward to Audioslave. Jane's Addiction also headlined the first Lollapalooza (because Perry Farrell is the organizer). I went to the first few at Shoreline, and enjoyed the musical diversity (albeit commercial). Early shows helped launch the careers of bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, and also widened the crossover appeal of people like Ice-T and Ice Cube. My favorite was the show with Ministry, who absolutely destroyed the headlining Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Not bad. Nothing can top 93 though (although 92 was close) Alice In Chains Primus Tool Rage man, what a show....
that same tour also had Fishbone, Front 242, Dinosaur Jr. & Arrested Development. that was some awesome junk.
I loved the '93 one, although they coulda skipped Dinosaur Jr, who just didn't get it done live and I didn't like much anyway. Same thing with Front 242, who I really do/did like, but unlike Ministry their music just didn't work as well live. Alice in Chains though...man they had it going back then.
Here's the full history for everyone. The only tour I ever attended was '93, and it was hit-and-miss. How'd you like to have that 1994 Second Stage? L 1991: Jane's Addiction Siouxsie & the Banshees Living Colour Ice-T and Body Count Butthole Surfers Nine Inch Nails Rollins Band No 2nd stage L 1992: Red Hot Chili Peppers Ministry Ice Cube Soundgarden Jesus & Mary Chain Pearl Jam Lush Notable 2nd stage -- Cypress Hill, Stone Temple Pilots L 1993: Primus Alice in Chains Dinosaur Jr Fishbone Arrested Development Front 242 Tool / Babes in Toyland Rage Against The Machine Notable 2nd stage -- Tsunami, Sebadoh, Royal Trux. Tool started this tour on the 2nd stage, then moved to the 1st stage (as planned) when Babes in Toyland left the tour. L 1994: Smashing Pumpkins Beastie Boys George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars The Breeders Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds A Tribe Called Quest L7 Boredoms Tibetan Monks Notable 2nd stage -- The Verve, Girls Against Boys, The Flaming Lips, Luscious Jackson, Guided By Voices, Lambchop, Stereolab, The Boo Radleys, Shudder To Think L 1995: Sonic Youth Hole Cypress Hill Pavement Beck Jesus Lizard Mighty Mighty Bosstones Various (Sinead O'Connor, Elastica, Moby, Superchunk) -- Sinead was supposed to play the whole tour but quit midway through, making her slot into a rotating act Notable 2nd stage -- Yo La Tengo, Coolio, Moby, The Roots, The Pharcyde, Built To Spill, Mike Watt L 1996: Metallica Soundgarden Ramones Rancid Shaolin Monks Screaming Trees Psychotica Various (Cocteau Twins, Wu Tang Clan, Violent Femmes, Rage Against The Machine, Devo, Cheap Trick, Waylon Jennings) -- show had a pre-arranged open slot for rotating main stage acts Notable 2nd stage -- Cornershop, Ben Folds Five, Girls vs Boys (again), Soul Coughing, Sponge
being the good gen x'er that i am, i attended the first four years. i think '92 was my overall fave, but there were memorable moments from all.
