Good man was Ronnie. I remember him mostly as fullback. In the days when a fullback didn't have to be a greyhound. The ball can go by, the winger can go by. But the ball AND the winger will not go by. We had a bad spell of taking penalties at one time so Ronnie stepped up and became the man. A good reliable one at that.
Liverpool have been fined £100,000 and banned from signing academy players from English league clubs for two years after being found guilty of tapping up a schoolboy from Stoke City. The Premier League on Wednesday announced the punishment following an investigation that started with allegations that Liverpool had poached the promising 11-year-old from Stoke but reneged on an agreement to pay his fees at private school. The boy’s parents pulled out of a deal with the Anfield club as a consequence and complained to the Premier League amid an allegation they have been left liable for thousands of pounds of school fees. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...ol-banned-signing-academy-players-fined-stoke
Tapping up and poaching happens all the time and by the sounds of it, on this occasion Liverpool were not willing to pay their way out of trouble.....heard countless stories of 'reps of clubs' making deals and incentivising decisions /youth player signatures by turning their parents with gifts etc It's about time they made effort to clamp down on this tbh and the new ruling is a step in the right direction
(I don't think we have a thread for this kind of "general football" article so I'll put it her and let the mods decide. It doesn't mention LFC - thank god). If you worry about money ruining football, or the morons in high positions ruining football, you may not want to read this, it'll make you want to puke ... https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-football-diary-uefa-john-delaney-living-wage
TIA interview with Fernando Torres on his side of what really happened when he left for Chelsea: https://www.theanfieldwrap.com/2017...ol-into-the-21st-century-the-players-stories/ Found it interesting. Always liked Torres til the acrimonious departure. He has some interesting things to say about Liverpool fansand the city, H&G, Gerrard, Kenny, Commoli and a few other names from that time. It's a chapter excerpt from a Simon Hughes book "Ring of Fire" that comes out tomorrow with each chapter dedicated to a different 21st century LFC personality. I've already pre-ordered my copy.
Yes, was a good read. I have a lot of sympathy for him. Similarly for Benitez who also took a lot of criticism. Both need to be viewed in the context of the toxic atmosphere during the G&H era.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli would have joined Liverpool had it not been for his financial demands, according to ex-Reds chief executive Ian Ayre. The Merseysiders were heavily linked with a move for the future England international but he eventually moved to White Hart Lane in January 2015. Despite joining from League One Milton Keynes Dons, Alli has been a revelation in the Premier League and has been named the PFA Young Player of the Year for a second time after netting 16 times in the top flight this term. His displays have underpinned Spurs' challenge for the title, which sees them trail leaders Chelsea by four points with five games remaining. But the trajectory of Alli's career could have been entirely different had Liverpool caved in to his demands upon his exit from MK Dons. Former manager Brendan Rodgers has previously spoken of his frustration over not being able to secure the deal, and Ayre – who left as CEO in February – says the rewards which Alli wanted saw talks break down. "There was interest in the player, but where it got to was that the demands at that time were not fitting to what he had achieved at that point," Ayre told a lecture at Liverpool's St George's Hall, according to Sky Sports. "We didn't feel the player matched that demand. It's easy to sit and say 'look what you could have bought', but how many players could you apply the reverse of that to? That's the truth." Rodgers revealed after he was sacked by the Anfield club that Dons manager Karl Robinson had given him a tip-off over Alli several years ago, and even met the player in a hotel room in an effort to thrash out an agreement. Alli's recent development has provoked praise from all corners of football, including from ex-Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp who believes he is worth £100m ($129m). But the 21-year-old is not the only player Liverpool have missed out on in recent years, with Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez also slipping by the wayside when the club attempted to replace the Barcelona-bound Luis Suarez. Ayre says the Chilean's desire to move to London thwarted the deal after Suarez had move to Cataluña. "The hardest one out has to be Suarez, because: a) nobody wanted him to leave; and b) halfway through the process he bit somebody at the World Cup!" added Ayre. "I remember the sporting director of Barcelona calling me during that game, immediately as Suarez bit the player, and he said to me: 'My friend, he's bitten somebody, how can this be the price?' I said: 'He'd already bitten somebody when you first bid!' "The thing to understand is that you are never actually in complete control of who you buy and sell as a club. There was much-publicised interest in Alexis Sanchez, as part of the deal which saw Luis go to Barcelona, and that deal was done. The only reason it wasn't was that the player and his wife wanted to live in London. We couldn't move the football club to London, unfortunately!"
Alli signed was on £3500 when he signed for Spurs initially and then an increase to £10k.....if Liverpool watched him so many times at MK Dons, surely his ability and potential was clear ? Otherwise something must have been wrong with the recruitment and 3.5k ain't a huge amount for over couple of years for a player displaying so much at that stage
years ago we had a chance to sign CR7 but took a pass coz the $$ demanded were deemed too high. shit happens, we can't expect to sign every great player we have a shot at. sanchez was a non-starter. location location location.
3.5k was too much for an 18 yr old yet 45k (and a 5 year contract) for a 20 year old Markovic was justifiable a year earlier?? Granted he had made appearances for his country but why sign him if he was to be loaned out?
Blame the unholy combination of Ayres and Rodgers... All you have to do is look at the impact of Klopp's first set of summer signings to see what the scouting and transfer departments can do if they actually have a managerial staff that know what to look for in potential prospects. That said, we'll never get everything right, all the time... Dele Alli looks good this year, but before we get all bent out of shape, let's see if he continues to develop in the ensuing years. There have been many bright, young English players that have been hyped-to-the-hilt as the next big thing, only to disappear into relative obscurity after a season or two.

Basically the whole thing. Started in Madrid, Barcelona, Cordoba, Cadiz, Sevilla, Granada, and then back to Madrid. We've got some friends and family abroad so even for a young couple like us it didnt set us back too much. Was a nice European experience, especially considering the two of us are from Miami and already speak Spanish (she's Puerto Rican and I've learned it well enough) so there was little to none language barrier. (sorry to go offtopic, can move this chat to the OT thread if anyone wants to hear more)
