Supply and demand strikes again. Wonder how much this will effect us. We were on the extra channels like what? 3-4 times last season? I think I can go to bars for those games and save the $50 but who knows...

I read this is going to affect bars as well because the games won't be on the "Extra Time" channels so they'll have to stream them. Major pain in the ass for them.

This is the part I don't like.

I guess this means you'll still be able to stream live games with cable sub that are broadcast like we've been able, but you need to pay for the replays and games that aren't broadcast. I think I watched at least a portion of at least half the games on replay.

So basically what they've done is left enough on the cable subscription so its not an option to cut the cord, but moved enough to the pay site that you grit your teeth and cough up the $6/mth.

    Capitalist bastards.

Looks like alternative streams will have to be found.

So viewership was down 18% last year. Does this do anything to increase those numbers? I think the revenue generated is going to be minimal and they are going to end up stagnating their viewership.

If average viewership is 420,000 per window and there are 4 or 5 windows in a weekend, that is about 2,000,000 viewers a weekend. Lets be generous and say they are all unique viewers. I can't imagine more than 50% (its probably much less) will stump the $50. 1m subscribers at $50 is $50m. That's not nothing, but its also probably a wildly ambitious number. $25m is probably closer to what they'll get.

Here is an interesting article about how much they make on cable subscriber fees http://www.whatyoupayforsports.com/numbers/.

They generate $321m from subscribers. They are on the hook for half that ($166m for 6 years) on PL rights alone. Its not a surprise they are trying to recoup some of that investment any way they can.

Like i said, I'm likely going to grit my teeth and pay the money. If I was in L4 I'd be happily paying 10 times as much for a season ticket, so if it helps us sign Keita and VVD, its the least I can do. ;)

It doesn't matter as much for Liverpool fans as we've got 29 of 38 games televised. With the app and various other ways to watch these days, their greedy decision to build in a pass really doesn't bother me.

looks like we're really spoiled in Canada - we get every prem game, all the "best" cup games as well. although to do that you need to subscribe to a specialty channel, costs me about $15 a month during the season. well worth it.

I know Setanta's gone. But the mention of $15/month brought back memories.

Five Liverpool games have been selected for live TV coverage by Sky or BT Sport in the first two months of the Premier League season.

The Reds' opening match of the season against Watford at Vicarage Road will be live on the first Saturday of the season at 12.30pm live on Sky.

That still won't see the Reds open the Premier League season, with Arsenal and Leicester playing a Friday night fixture at the Emirates as the curtain raiser.

The Reds' home opener against Crystal Palace remains at 3pm on a Saturday on August 19 but the following weekend sees the Reds' fixture against Arsenal at Anfield switch to Sunday, August 27 at 4pm live on Sky.

Liverpool return after the international break with a trip to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola's Manchester City and the game has been switched to 12.30pm on Saturday, September 9, again live on Sky.

Burnley at home remains at 3pm on Saturday, September 16 but the following weekend sees the trip to Leicester's King Power stadium moved to 5.30pm on Saturday, September 23 with live coverage on BT Sport.

Liverpool then switch to a Sunday for the away trip to Rafa Benitez's Newcastle, now moved to 4.30pm on Sunday, October 1 live on Sky.

    Liverpool fixtures now:
    Sat 12th August 12:30pm Watford (A)

    Sat 19th August 3pm Crystal Palace (A)

    Sun 27th August 4pm Arsenal (H)

    Sat September 9th 12:30pm Manchester City (A)

    Sat September 16th 3pm Burnley (H)

    Sat September 23rd 5.30pm Leicester City (A)

    Sun October 1st 16:30pm Newcastle United (A)

$50 bugs me for the Gold package - but it is about $6/month and I can connect it to TV via my Roku. I will probably buy it with gritted teeth.
