When I was last in Liverpool it was the Spring of the 3-1 Merseyside derby a couple seasons back. My party met an Evertonian that worked in a bar right across from the airbnb in which I was staying, and he worked there with a displaced United supporter who had at that point lived in Liverpool for years... so needless to say, my group comes in for drinks the night before the match, we start chatting about football, and then we are hanging out with them after the bar is closed getting digs in about our club loyalties. This Evertonian, I'll never forget his prediction for what would happen the next season... without batting an eye he said "Everton top 4". This is a few months before Lukaku transferred to United, remember? So of course we bring that up, "isn't Lukaku going to United or maybe Chelsea? Writing seems on the wall with that one"... so he hunkers down and says "listen, he's going to stay... and on top of that, they're going to get Rooney back..." That was his instant formula for top 4, somehow -- keeping Lukaku, and pairing him with Rooney. Easily one of the most deluded things I've ever heard a supporter say about their club.
I know. We’ve lost like 10 league games in the past 2 seasons and he thinks we are going to lose 5 more than them.
I turned 60 this past June. My youngest son, naturally brought up as a Red, and loyal though we've never won the league in his lifetime (yet!) called and said he was taking me to Liverpool to see a match this year as a gift (I'd never been to England). He gave me a few matches to choose from, one of them being the derby - that's a no-brainer I said! So, there we were, 50 some odd rows up in the Kop, and I'm thinking this has been an amazing trip - tour of the ground, so many pints, and hanging out with my son. Too bad we couldn't have topped it off with a win...and you know the rest!
Hahaha - that’s awesone!! And please post more often - you’ve been a member here for a long time it seems!
Excellent , augie ! I did something very similar last March with my two sons , watched the Reds v Newcy.
