And if the referee had let it go for that reason, then we could have a debate about whether TAA was close enough for the laws to allow for that (he wasn't IMO)... but that's objectively not what happened. The referee let it go because he said TAA's arm was in a natural position, this is what the Premier League have confirmed.

I have no dog in this fight. I just don't understand the unwillingness to admit the obvious error that was made. Jaime Carragher had no problem doing it.

Also probably breaches a few UN conventions.

    The TAA call was 50:50.

The Silva handball was a foul.

    So two things can happen:
    1. Free kick to Liverpool (for Silva's handball)
    2. Goal to Liverpool

Could never be a City penalty.

I do hope people saw this. Trent called it out right after the match.

the ball never hits trents hand unless Silva hits it first with his hand.

There was about 0.5 seconds between the two. The ref could call it whichever way he liked without being a "free foul".

Here we are talking about VAR again instead of a very mature Liverpool performance - and a clinical one too.

Yes. It's an automatic free kick against an attacker in the penalty area. Similar thing happened recently when we had a goal disallowed because it barely brushed against Manes arm.

The law remains that deliberate handball is an offence. But accidental handball will also be a free-kick if...

    • the ball goes into the goal off an attacker
    • a player gets the ball using their arm or hand and then scores, or creates a goalscoring opportunity
    • a player's hand or arm has made their body "unnaturally bigger"
    • the player's arm or hand is above their shoulder (unless the player has controlled the ball onto their own arm or hand)
So Silva accidentally handled. Which directly led to TAA's handball *. A penalty (if given) is a goalscoring opportunity. Therefore, free kick to Liverpool for Silva's accidental handball.

    * if adjudicated as handball (a 50:50 call)

    QED

This team is just unbelievable. All three goals were world class. Fabinho with a man of the match performance and that goal was something else. The second goal is the perfect Liverpool goal. The fullback to fullback pass setting up the goal. Henderson’s ball to Mane was sublime.

We have already played all of the “big 6” and have also played Leicester. City have only played Spurs and Liverpool.

We need to continue to relentlessly pick up results. There is still a long way to go. Today is a wonderful day to be a Red.

Interesting take from a former Premier League referee
Point of law...as Silva handled the ball (albeit accidental) before TAA did this would have been penalised even if a penalty had been awarded. Attacking handball doesn’t have to be deliberate.
So, a penalty would never have been possible due to it touching Silva hand in build up

    Mark Clattenburg said something similar.

If Sadio Mane had played today Liverpool may have won the game. Divock Origi has shown he is a supersub. Both teams have gears to go through.

Liverpool play all of the top six in their first 12 games so I expect City will have a decent margin by November time.

By the way, we're close to getting the Henderson for whom we paid £16 million all those years ago.

All "controversy" aside (let's just say we're even for last weekend's nonsense), what a win and what a performance. Besides their late goal, it reminded me of our 3-0 win at Anfield in the CL 2 seasons ago.

8 points clear of LC & Chavs and 9 points clear of 4th place Citeh going into another international distraction. Life is good. We'll need the cushion with the rough schedule we have coming up over the holidays.

Still over the moon with the result. Even after they scored I never thought our defense would concede two more. Sure, it could have happened, but this isn't the 2017!

I just wish Sadio would have flopped in front of the City bench after his goal...
