In order for the academy to deemed successful, Liverpool should always have: 3 academy products in the first team (either in the first XI or on the subs bench for a match such as a CL final). 3 making their league/CL debut annually. Seeing 2 or more sold annually to provide funds for the academy and first team.
We would have to have (and continue to have) some real luck for this to happen. If debut is just a game - then maybe - but I would want players who look like they belong for the long term. Right now we have Neco, Jones, Elliot all showing they could be in the mix for the first team. Maybe Brewster will come back and mesh as well. After that we have Hoever and maybe Van den Berg. There are others - but these guys jumped out over this season. And they got really fortunate to be able to get some meaningful games.
given what we've seen this year, I'd add: the U23s being able to provide 7+ starters in the early rounds of the domestic cups.
Are you counting players like Elliot, Van den Berg, and Hoever as academy products? These are players that were bought from other clubs at a young age for a hefty fee. Trent and Curtis Jones are true academy products who grew up in the academy.
Liverpool don't intend to send Curtis Jones out on loan next season with Jurgen Klopp looking to include the youngster in his first-team plans. (Liverpool Echo) I think he's done enough this season to show Klopp he's ready to take the next step into the first team squad. Potentially Trent and Curtis could form the team's Scouse foundation for the next decade.
