His name just caught my eye and I was looking around but wasn't able to find any.

    BTW, he's now at Hoffenheim.

Israel should give him a call - he was born in Argentina, so you have to think he at least has a Jewish father.

Is Kyle Beckerman the only Jewish player at the 2014 World Cup?

From a Jewish law (halakhic) standpoint, DeAndre Yedlin was the only Jewish player at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

    @MHaifa1913

Where have you been? You hadn't posted since February 2013 and hadn't posted in the Israel forum since April 2012. I was the most frequent poster here in your absence.

    http://ethnicelebs.com/deandre-yedlin

"His mother, Rebecca Yedlin, who is caucasian, is Ashkenazi Jewish. His father is evidently of African-American, Dominican, and Native American ancestry.

DeAndre’s maternal grandparents are Ira Nathan Yedlin (the son of Bert Yedlin and Lola) and Linda Gayle Schaffer (the daughter of Irving J. Schaffer and Shyrle R.). Lola was born in Russia."

Surname Yedlin has Slavic sound, probably originally Jedlin. Polish area. Schaffer means Hard Worker.

    Jedlina: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedlina,_Silesian_Voivodeship

    http://pl.wiktionary.org/wiki/jedlina

    Jedlina is a plant.

    http://pl.wiktionary.org/wiki/jedlina#mediaviewer/File:Abies_alba_01.jpg

Jedlin became Yedlin so that people in USA don't pronounce as /ˈdʒædlin/

I've seen the "articles" in the Israeli media and I've seen him on Internet lists since he first broke through for Boca, but Walter Samuel is definitely not Jewish.

Found this recent pic in Walter Samuel's wife's (Cecilia Verhagen) public Instagram account. Also found an interview with his Samuel's mother from a few years back in Spanish (Diario Ole, Argentina's biggest sports daily) where she says that she clutches a statue of the Virgin whenever he plays. Also found two features on a priest who acts as the Argentine national team's chaplain and in both articles (one in El Gráfico, argentina's biggest sports magazine, now monthly, and La Nacion the newspaper with probably the second biggest circulation after Clarin, which owns Olé). In both features, the priest lists Samuel as someone he officiated the marriage of.

Saw him on a bunch of lists/articles listing him as Jewish (almost going back from when he first made his debut) but I think someone decided his name was Jewish and these articles relied on those lists without doing any fact checking.

Note that he changed his name to Samuel (his step-father's last name) from Lujan. Sources list Lujan as both his biological father's (who he has never met) surname and his mother's surname. It's unclear which is accurate.

Looks like we can scratch one of the biggest names off the list.

Yacob has been listed in some blogs as Jewish, but I would bet substantial sums of money that he is not. (From a small town in Santa Fe, said in an interview that both of his parents were one of eight kids, nothing in sister Monica's Facebook gives any hints of jewishness). Aued doesn't even sound Jewish to me and I found no evidence to support that he is. I would also bet substantial sums that he is not.

Yacob, Jacobi, Yacobi - really sound like Jewish surnames.

    Jonathan Azulay: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Azulay

About Claudio ARIEL Yacob - I consider his middle name also as valuable reference:

Ariel - settlement in Eretz Jisrael.
    Ariel University - Israel.
    Ariel - lion of God.

Walter Samuel maybe adopted Jewish legacy, but in his roots, I have never seen him as someone who would declare himself as Jewish. Samuel - Shmuel.

Argentina has large Jewish community. Surnames are changeable, some people want to assimilate, some of them fled from some negative source...

Observe this website, maybe slight off-topic, but it embraces Jewish surnames in Argentina.

    http://www.jewishgenealogy.com.ar/surnames_sa.html

    AIZIKAVICIENE - obvious Lithuanian influence.
    ALMOSNINO - Sephardi, Ladino influence.
ALPERIN - for sure it had H (Halperin), but Spanish communities avoid the letter H.
ALVAREZ - interesting, common Hispanic surname.
AMBURGO - resident of Hamburg, Germany.
    AMSTARDANSKY - resident of Amsterdam.
    ANGIELCZYKS - Polish influence.
AQUERMAN - for sure it was Akerman, or Ackermann.
    ARAUJO - typical Portuguese surname.
    ARAZI - Morocco? Hicham Arazi.
SABOR - Croatian word for Parliament. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_Parliament
SACERDOTE - Latin word for priest in Catholic ceremony.
SACSONOFF - Slavic variation of a person who came from Saxony.
    SAMORA - Zamora...common Hispanic surname.
    SAMUEL: http://www.genealogiajudia.com/SAMUEL

YAGODA - Slavic word for Strawberry. (Jagoda)
YAJIA - Spanish saying: YAHIA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahia

A lot of surnames have German language, Slavic language(s) influence. If you want to "catch" with surnames, you can see that there are a lot of people who don't have typically Jewish surnames, but they have the heritage.

For example: Jose Araujo Samora. People would thought that he has Portuguese, Spanish heritage. You need to create some deeper model to investigate someones heritage.:)

Cvitanich is not Jewish. He's Croatian. And he hasn't played for Boca in years. I think he was just signed by Miami FC.

According to Wikipedia (an unimpeachable source), Ariel Seltzer tried to sign for Beitar thinking that one of his grandfathers was Jewish (presumably the paternal grandfather with the name Seltzer) but was unable to qualify for the law of return. Since the law of return is much more liberal than the halakhic orthodox definition of judaism (generally one grandparent suffices), I'm wondering why he did not qualify. (It's possible that the grandfather was Jewish but renounced or converted.) I don't trust wikipedia and the source is in Hebrew, which I don't speak. Does anyone have any clarification? Additionally, he hasn't played for Independente Rivadavia for at least five years. Last I knew, he was playing for Union de Mar del Plata. Don't know if he's still there.

Indeed, Wikipedia is not the most accurate. These links are/were in the entries for both but may have been deleted.

Darío Cvitanich - "צוויטאניץ' הוא מועמד לחיזוק מכבי ת"א"
Ariel Seltzer - בית"ר ירושלים: סוכמה רכישתו של אריאל זלצר

Transfermarkt lists Seltzer's last club as Club Atlético Juventud Unida Universitario. He may have retired as he is in his mid-30s at this point. Nevertheless, I always wonder what if he had joined Beitar, acclimated to Israel etc. Beitar didn't threaten Haifa for the title that season but maybe he could have helped them in the UEFA Cup against Dinamo București the next season when they went on to win the league.

Seltzer was at Union Mar Del Plata after Juventud Unida. I did a search on his name in Diario Olé (Argentina's largest sports daily) and he was on the bench in a game for Unión as recently as September 2015.

Update: he played for Unión de Mar Del Plata in their final game of the season on November 15. He was yellow carded. Whether he is still under contract with them for next season I don't know. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1451416140.341669.jpg

Seems that former Columbus Crew forward, Aaron Schoenfeld, is on trial at Maccabi Netanya.
