The first Brazilian Super Star was Leonidas called the Black Diamond by the Italians.

    Zagallo? Torres? Didi?

Has Ronaldo finally matched Romario on the world stage? Certainly he's behind in the records, club goals and the like...but he's accomplished as much at 25 as Romario did at 28. If he returned to Brasilian club football as Romario did soon after the 94 World Cup, Ronaldo would easily pass into this class. (I'm secretly hoping he'll win a scudetto for Inter next year, then play for 5 years at Flamengo...)

I believe as the modern era passes into the 'previous generation', Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo will definitely make the list. Cafu and Rivaldo should be on the short list after that.

I recently looked back and watched a few hours of tape of Pele and his teams from 58 and 62...certainly it's another era, and the speed, size, and strength of the players doesn't match today. But I couldn't help but have a little more respect for some of todays players that perform much of the same magic..the fabulous ball control, penetrating the box - all against MUCH more difficult defenses. The defenders in those days played 1 meter off of the ball and just let the player stand at the penalty line for 5-10 seconds as his teammates were making runs and cuts to open space.

Those players listed are all historically world class, but I felt a little more respect for some of the greats of the modern game also, given the new obstacles in front of them.

I don't feel that the current players are necessarily faster, although they are certainly stronger. Marking wasn't as close during that era, it is true, but a defender couldn't mark Pele closely or he'd be embarrassed (unless able to get away with fouling like Portugal in '66, for example).

Some other Brazilian legends of the past:

    Vava
    Gerson
    Nilton Santos
    Djalma Santos

Now that this thread has been reborn I must say its a HUGE task to compose a Brazilian Hall of fame list, because there are SO MANY GREAT players...and I mean GREAT...that are not known Internationally but that were huge in there club career in Brazil. Brazil has so many greats that not all could shine on the national team, most greats only had a few passings with the National team. Just to name a few that I can think of from the era I lived there (79-85)

    Reinaldo (Atletico MG)
Jair (Inter RS also WC with Penharol in 80-something)
    Renato Gaucho
    Carpegianni
    Dario (aka...King Dada)
    Escurinho
    Biro-Biro
    Alemao
    Casagrande
    Mario Sergio
Some Goalies: Manga, Leao, Taffarel, Raul Plasmann

These are just a few from that era..if we were to list all eras the list would be gigantic, in the hundreds.

Did I miss something or did Romario not make your starting XI OR even your bench?

    Romario and Center Backs

Yes, I forgot Romario. Shame on me.

By the way, Brazil does not need center backs.

Can you think of any that would push the other
    11 out of the lineup??
I really believe Lucio will eventually be the best
    ever.
