Youth Soccer leaders in South Texas, As decision makers in the youth soccer community here in South Texas an opportunity exists this Sunday that may never come around again to gain the consciousness of our youth community when it comes to soccer. In short to create awareness that is beneficial to all involved in soccer but mainly for youth. With the Houston Dynamo playing the New England Revolution this Sunday in the MLS Cup Final , South Texas Soccer fans (more specifically Houston areas soccerfans) have an opportunity to travel to Frisco, TX for the Final. Geographically it is an amazing opportunity. This would not be a request if not other for the fact that the game is up the road in Dallas. This opportunity to grow the sport may never come around. Get it done guys, cancel schedules at all levels and make one of the most important youth decisions ever in growing the sport. It truly is an amazing opportunity. Show the youth community that STYSA can make the decisions that best benefit 'the kids' and the sport. Glenn Davis
No doubt. It would be a good chance for teams to have pizza parties and watch The Orange bring home the cup.
As usual, Glenn is ahead of the pack when it comes to forward thinking on these types of issues. It would be one thing if the MLS Cup was being held in Columbus but since it's close, we need to take advantage, especially as the opportunity may not come up again for awhile (Dynamo making the Championship combined with it being in Frisco.)
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda go to www.glenndavissoccer.com chek out what he just posted this morning
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda We need to continue to push this. It is ridiculous that the majority of the clubs have clubs on Sunday. What kind of example are we setting as a youth soccer community if we are not supporting our pro team in the MLS Cup?
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda Our club's director of training just sent out an email indicating that most local clubs and STYSA are pushing for this but as of right now the games are still on. He did encourage everyone that if they get the games called off to make an effort to see the game. Luckily, my son only had a game scheduled for saturday but if we had one on sunday we would have missed it for the MLS Cup . . .
Great sentiment, maybe next yeah our programs will be a little more forward thinking and plan ahead for these scenarios. I hope all the youth remind their folks to DVR/Tivo the game, go out and enjoy their games! I mean, I understand cancelling regular season games that can be moved a week back or so, or just putting them all down as draws, or whatever, don't know if they'll run into schedule issues with the holidays coming up. But would you want to cancel something that's been around longer than the MLS? How about this STYSA event? 18TH ANNUAL WURSTFEST TOURNAMENT - HEB Soccer Complex and Weston Fields, New Braunfels - November 11-12, 2006 Tough call. I'd rather see kids out there playing and make sure they watch the game when they get home.
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda Schedule issues are a big factor, especially with older teams that qualify for STYSA playoffs that are coming soon. Most of the Sunday games played U-14 and older, plus the Adult leagues. Some of the teams in BAYSA are having to double-up and play 2 games this weekend due to rainouts earlier in the season. If it was a perfect world, we'd all be in Frisco cheering. Oh well, there's always DVR (my option due to a 3pm start for our TORSO game).
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda One day Glenn will learn the value of using bcc in his emails Anyway, here's a reply-to-all response:
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda Glenn sent out another email this afternoon to specific youth club directors:
I rode in this morning with a Houstonians FC dad. His son has a match at the very same kickoff time! I had to contain myself from just going off on the whole situation! He did agree that it would be nice if the schedules did not conflict. I just told him that in any other nation (cept Canada) there would be a total unified blackout by all dads related with soccer in Houston. It would be as simple as all the dads saying that he and his kids would be in front of the TV to take in the match if not at the stadium itself! It comes down to a fixture list. The MLS Cup as held at a neutral ground, is scheduled way in advanced. What is lacking is the INTIMACY with the Domestic League in this nation. So many youth coaches in a city could barely respond correctly with who is the leading goal scorer for their local side. More over when their local side is making a run deep into the playoffs. These men ned to get on it and understand the importance of supporting 'Club and Country'. Come'on ya soccer dads....don't be a soccer mom with a penis!
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda I think we know that most of these "soccer dads" aren't necessarily soccer fans as well. A lot of them are only involved because their kids are involved (not speaking of coaches and such, necessarily). To them it's a "kids" sport and their "man's sport" is football/baseball, etc. I agree that the league should simply waive all the games on Sunday or reschedule them somehow (there are weekdays, ya know)...but if a club is more interested in it's own team and not interested in the Dynamo in the MLS Cup then there's something wrong there...a definite disconnect....but nothing we can do about that except keep supporting our team and hope that our love for the team spreads like wildfire. If it were my kid - he'd just have to miss a game (let's think about the big picture folks!) and be with me in Frisco. Your local side in the league championship doesn't happen every year (well, it might if we make this a DYNAsty) - how can you compare that to a regular season youth game? Your kid will get more out of being a part of the MLS Cup then they will out of one unimportant (in the grand scheme of things) youth game. One day they'll come around. I wonder how many pee-wee football games would occur while the SuperBowl is on? That said, I commend all soccer moms and dads who have supported the Dynamo this year and seen what a great impact the Dynamo have had/will have on youth soccer in this city.
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda I agree with this 100 percent, even in terms of the dads who enjoy the sport. MLS has not yet completely inserted itself into the consciousness of the youth soccer community here. It will happen, but it will take time. Many of the soccer parents I know enjoy the Dynamo but aren't yet diehard fans. I agree and unfortunately, this is a sentiment you don't hear enough of on these boards or among soccer fans. Too many people are quick to put down the kids in attendance or mock the "soccer moms" in the stands. They don't realize how important it is to the sport as a whole that those people are there. I sent an e-mail to my U11 team parents this week encouraging them to watch the MLS Cup with their kids. The goal, I said, was to "expand the soccer culture in their household beyond twice a week training and a game on Saturday." In other words, our mission is to help these kids develop a lifelong love of the sport -- not just participate in it like you would Scouting or pottery classes. But youth soccer isn't alone. The NCAA scheduled its second-round games in the women's tournament for Sunday afternoon, too.
Re: Letter from Glenn Davis to youth soccer leaders in Houston (Cancel games on Sunda Glenn Davis: Local leagues should take break to watch Dynamo in MLS Cup http://www.chron.com/sports/soccer/ (It is under multi-media). Glenn makes a compelling argument about cancelling games Sunday afternoon.
