When players scored the most important goals which largely impacts to history of their team to win the title, they have been often best remembered in those scenes. In negative way, if players made mistakes, caused goal conceding or incredible shot out of target in very near the goal, etc and finally effect to lose champion/relegate or disqualified for the next round in major international tournaments, they have been also remembered in undesirable way. It is not often legends made the incredible big mistakes, thereby it is interesting to list the mistake events. I’m not purpose to punish them, just wanna know which legends ever not only made incredible mistakes but also is a main cause to the team failure. In Example ; Toninho Cerezo mistook in passing back in match against Italy in the 1982 World Cup Gerrard lost ball control and finally conceded the goal in decisive game against Chelsea in previous premier league season. riquelme missed the penalty vs arsenal in 2006 cl semi final however i considered him the best player over 2 leg vs arsenal in term of playmaking
Miss in penalty is very common and it is not specialized by many creative players. Also, it is more caused by incredible save of Lehmann than mistake by Riquelme ?
i think that was a combination of both factors if i'm not mistaken, lehmann did studied about riquelme penalty before that match
Yes, Lehmann also studied how english players shoot penalties before world cup game and it payed off.
Yes ... ironically many greats did miss a PK Zico Wc86 Socrates WC86 (PSO) Platini WC86 (PSO) Maradona WC90 Baggio WC94 (PSO)] Joaquin WC02 (PSO) Gerrard WC06 (PSO) Lampard WC06 (PSO) ... Figo UCL03 SF (vs Juve)
Henrik Larsson gave the ball away in a dangerous area in his very first game for Celtic away to Hibs. Chic Charnley (now there was a character, Gazza would pale into insignificance next to Chico) took the ball on and lashed an unstoppable left footer into the net. 45secs in. Not the best video but still...
One of the gravest mistakes I can think of was not one done on the pitch but a comment made after a game. It was when Bayern had played 0-0 at Anfield Road against Liverpool in a 1980-81 European Cup semi final when Bayern's captain Paul Breitner had made some unpleasant and uncomplimentary comments about Liverpool’s style of play which was a great motivation for that Liverpool side, especially Graeme Souness was well motivated to show Breitner who was the boss on the pitch in the return leg (which ended 1-1 and saw Liverpool reach the final). After the final whistle Souness paid a visit to the Bayern locker room where he apparently said some triumphant words to the Bayern players. To me it was such a stupid comment made by Breitner that fired up an (in that season) struggling Liverpool team which could have been beat by a Bayern side which was at its best form since the early-1970s.
well it's not so "common" as one stated ... Stats said: in PK at club level 84% conversion in PK WC level >77% conversion
Pity he (Souness) didn't remember that when he was manager of Blackburn Rovers and they played Celtic in the UEFA cup... http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport...utton-hand-blackburn-striking-lesson-1.133926
I means it is very common if considers number of mistakes in history and also very common for such a given topic.
Maradona's was also in a penalty shootout. WC matches where more than one legendary player missed a pk: West Germany vs France 82 - Stielike and Bossis France vs Brazil 86 - Zico, Socrates and Platini Argentina vs Yugoslavia 90 - Maradona and Stojkovic Brazil vs Italy 94 - Baresi and Baggio Argentina vs England 98 - Crespo and Ince France vs Italy 98 - Albertini and Lizarazu Germany vs Argentina 06 - Ayala and Cambiasso Portugal vs England 06 - Lampard and Gerrard
right thanks I did not name Baresi Ayala becuase they were DF Crespo , Trezeguet (striker) also missed but they were not "experts" in PK per se for their career! Gyan (striker) missed 2 in WC2010 LOL Platini Zico Socrates Baggio Maradona ... were top legends and they were also main PK takers in any of their teams (like riquelme ) so no shame ...
what I meant was the irony ... that some great legends and "experts" in PK did miss in big stage .. who cares if Donovan or Neuer could do PK? yes I even I can score passed Cassilas or Neuer in a good day LOL
