Everyone who wore the number 10 of Argentina or Brazil carried the legacies of Pele and Maradona on their backs. I am interested to know other jersey numbers and their legacies on different teams. A few that I knew of: Manchester United 7: Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo wore it... and wore it well. Real Madrid 7: Kopa, Amancio Amaro, Juanito, Butragueno, Raul and Ronaldo. Only one other player ever wore that number since Kopa.
Famous number 9: Di Stefano (Real and Argentina), Hidegkuti (Hungary), Dixie Dean (Everton), Tommy Lawton (Kubala (Barca), Eusebio (Portugal), Muller (Bayern), Cruijff (Ajax), Batistuta (Fiorentina, Argentina), Ronaldo (PSV, Barca, Inter, Brazil), Alan Shearer (Newcastle), Kluivert (Barca, Netherland), Crespo (Inter), Inzaghi (Milan)
From a German perspective, the only really "legendary" shirt number may have been 5 which was linked to Franz Beckenbauer, as he wore that number for his club from 1964 to 1977 (although in two of his three World Cups he wore the #4). When he moved to Cosmos they gave him the #6 as they didn't want him to play in central defense but in midfield (Beckenbauer also once wore the #10 in a 1968 Bundesliga game). Other shirt numbers linked to famous players: 11 - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Emmerich 10 - Günter Netzer, Wolfgang Overath, Lothar Matthäus 9 - Gerd Müller, Uwe Seeler, Rudi Völler 8 - Paul Breitner, Lothar Matthäus 7 - Reinhard Libuda, Mehmet Scholl, Pierre Littbarski 5 - Franz Beckenbauer, Hans-Peter Briegel, Klaus Augenthaler 4 - Karlheinz Förster, Georg Schwarzenbeck, Jürgen Kohler 3 - Andreas Brehme, Paul Breitner, Karl-Heinz Schnellinger 2 - Berti Vogts, Manfred Kaltz
Unlucky for some... but not for these players! #13. Gerd Müller, Michael Ballack, Thomas Müller, Rudi Völler, Karl-Heinz Riedle
The Immortalised #10 Shirt Can someone list all the Argentineans that have worn the famous #10 shirt after Diego Maradona.
Weird and unconventional number jersey in Football (Soccer) 44 Massimo Oddo (Milan) 55 Akinbyi (EPL) 77 Quaresma 88 Gary Hooper, 99 Victor Baia, Ronaldo (Milan) 100 Bautista (Mex) 200 Harley (Goias ) 300 Juninho (Vascogamma) 400 Costa (Santos) 1+2 Pablo Sorin( Villareal) 1+8 Zamorano (Inter) 3+5 Rincon (Santos) 8+7 Firman Utina (Japan) 01 Roger Ceni 0 Zerouali (nick name ZERO at Aberdeen)
Everyone thought when Gary Hooper signed for Celtic and chose the no.88 shirt it was a fantastic gesture to the club. The fans immediately loved it. The new guy chooses no.88 on his back as the club was founded in 1888. Erm... nope. Gary Hooper: "I was born in 1988. That's why I have no.88 shirt." Nice one Gary. Thanks for bursting that bubble.
Legia Deyna #10 West Ham Moore #6 Cagliari Riva #11 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retired_numbers_in_association_football Some of those are ridiculous though. Raul seriously got his number retired by Schalke?
Just for a game when he completed 300 games playing for Vasco. This is common in Brazil. Its traditional number is 8.
You're right .. all the number 200, 300 400 .. were just onetime exhibition game .. but they marked out a distinct number in football
