Everyone who wore the number 10 of Argentina or Brazil carried the legacies of Pele and Maradona on their backs. I am interested to know other jersey numbers and their legacies on different teams.

A few that I knew of:

Manchester United 7: Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo wore it... and wore it well.

Real Madrid 7: Kopa, Amancio Amaro, Juanito, Butragueno, Raul and Ronaldo. Only one other player ever wore that number since Kopa.

From a German perspective, the only really "legendary" shirt number may have been 5 which was linked to Franz Beckenbauer, as he wore that number for his club from 1964 to 1977 (although in two of his three World Cups he wore the #4). When he moved to Cosmos they gave him the #6 as they didn't want him to play in central defense but in midfield (Beckenbauer also once wore the #10 in a 1968 Bundesliga game).

Other shirt numbers linked to famous players:

    11 - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Emmerich
10 - Günter Netzer, Wolfgang Overath, Lothar Matthäus
9 - Gerd Müller, Uwe Seeler, Rudi Völler
8 - Paul Breitner, Lothar Matthäus
7 - Reinhard Libuda, Mehmet Scholl, Pierre Littbarski
5 - Franz Beckenbauer, Hans-Peter Briegel, Klaus Augenthaler
4 - Karlheinz Förster, Georg Schwarzenbeck, Jürgen Kohler
3 - Andreas Brehme, Paul Breitner, Karl-Heinz Schnellinger
2 - Berti Vogts, Manfred Kaltz

Everyone thought when Gary Hooper signed for Celtic and chose the no.88 shirt it was a fantastic gesture to the club. The fans immediately loved it. The new guy chooses no.88 on his back as the club was founded in 1888.

    Erm... nope.

Gary Hooper: "I was born in 1988. That's why I have no.88 shirt."

Nice one Gary. Thanks for bursting that bubble.

Just for a game when he completed 300 games playing for Vasco. This is common in Brazil. Its traditional number is 8.
