JOKE OF ASIA - on and off the field.

Thailand is rightly known as the "Land of Smiles", but even this country's legendary graciousness will have worn thin after Wednesday night's goings-on at the Surakul stadium in Phuket.

PITCH BATTLE: Lebanon’s players provoke a brawl with Thailand during the King’s Cup last week.

Not for the first time in recent football history, Thailand's national team found itself involved in an ugly on-field incident involving blood, flying fists and a team walking off in protest. And, this time at least, the Thais had done absolutely nothing wrong.
It all happened at Phuket's Surakul stadium as the hosts took on Lebanon in the King's Cup, a friendly invitational tournament, now in its 39th year and one of the Asian football calendar's most convivial events.
As the sun set on the modest stadium, the good-spirited crowd generated a party atmosphere as Thailand roared into an early 2-0 lead against a poor Lebanese side.
As the second half wore on, however, the mood changed on the pitch. The Lebanese scored a goal five minutes after the re-start and troubled the Thais with a far better performance.
An unfortunate and accidental clash of heads with 10 minutes remaining in the game left a Lebanese player with a badly-gashed head and several of his teammates with a sense of injustice.
One of them, substitute Zakaria Charara, took it upon himself to exact some kind of revenge and he sparked an argument with Thailand's impressive defender Suree Sukha after they tangled.
Things got out of control and players and officials from both sides got involved. Charara then slapped Suree's twin brother Surat in an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.
Bizarrely, the Lebanese team then walked off the pitch, presumably feeling they had been wronged, while the TV coverage ran replays of Charara committing what surely had to be a sending-off offence.
The game was stopped for nearly 10 minutes before Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) and an experienced Fifa executive member, persuaded the visitors to return to the pitch. After the distraction, Charara only got a yellow card.
In injury time, another clash between Suree and Charara (who, by now, was completely out of control) led to another near-riot. The referee then decided to blow the final whistle with a few minutes of stoppage time unplayed.
Anyone who watched the game could tell you that the Lebanese were wrong to take the action they did and that Charara's behaviour was disgraceful.
Looking back at the game later, it was obvious that several of the Lebanese players had been arguing among themselves throughout the match.
Sources later revealed some members of the Lebanon team had been involved in a punch-up with their own team-mates at the tournament's official hotel some days earlier.
Simply put, all of the above would suggest the team had not demonstrated the kind of professionalism the tournament deserves. Thailand's football authorities are making great strides in taking the national team forward and it was notable that team coach Peter Reid kept well clear of the nonsense going on during the second half in Phuket.
After the game Reid told reporters he would be reminding his team of the need to avoid being distracted by the sort of antics produced by Charara.
The King's Cup provided an opportunity for Thailand's fast-improving side to pick up good habits, not bad. Indeed, Thailand's opponents in Friday's final virtually wrote the book on professionalism.
Denmark's representatives in Thailand were by no means the country's first-choice national team. Or even the second choice for that matter. However, they were here under the leadership of national head coach Morten Olsen and his national team coaching staff.
Olsen, the former Anderlecht star who won more than 100 caps for his country, told me that he wanted to immerse his squad of youth-team products and fringe players in exactly the same atmosphere that the he would the full national side - the same preparation, training, tactical shape in games.
What was even more impressive about Olsen and his team was that they refused to allow themselves to be unsettled by anything that came their way (a poor pitch which had not been watered as they had requested, plus a kick-off time in blazing later afternoon heat for their match against North Korea).
Denmark handled all that came their way in a manner befitting former European champions. Plus, they won a tough match despite several of their players experiencing severe dehydration.
The King's Cup, and tournaments of its ilk, are vital if Asian football is to continue on its upward path. The Thais are to be commended on the excellent job they have done in staging it, but perhaps they need to rethink their approach to choosing their guests.

Lebanon vs Syria
No postponement of the match Lebanon vs Syria

Aware of our sources from within the Lebanese Football Federation, that there would be no postponement of the match against Syria and the team match on time.

UNOMIG continues to the Syrian team at the time of writing, at eleven am trying to postpone the match, as required by the laws of the competition to 48 hours of the day, but these attempts met with the refusal of the Lebanese Football Federation, and the match observer, Nasser El Riani (Oman).

A number of elected members of the Syrian Mission to the players and administrators have been poisoned before being admitted to hospital for treatment Trad.

This is the game where I expect Lebanon to pick it up and put their hearts into the game against Syria, unfortunately it seems like they did not, I have not seen the match, but I am assuming that we never play well. We need change in the league and the national team.

Al Ahed are struglling these season. I don't that they stand a big chance against Neftchi. Busaiteen hmm..don't know much about them but I would guess that they are stronger then Ahed. Chances to advace = very slim.

Good group for Safa. Al Zawraa are strong, but the other two teams could be handeld.

Al Mabarrah was just lucky to win the cup last season, you can see that on their performance during the frist round of the league. They are only sixth. They do not stand any chance against Al Arabi and Arbil.

My guess would be that one out of three teams will advance, but I wouldn't be suprised if none of them would advance.

THE Brave Warriors will take on Lebanon in a friendly international in Beirut on April 1, national football coach Tom Saintfiet said yesterday.

He said the side will consist of mostly foreign-based players, with at least four locally based players to be included.

The match falls on the Fifa international calendar date and Saintfiet wants to send the strongest possible team.

He said Namibia was invited to play against Lebanon after the involvement of Namibia's technical director Klaus Starke who has contacts in that country.

Of the original 12 First Division teams which started the season, I am aware that Tripoli Sporting Club (TSC) dropped out.

Of the remaining 11 teams how many will be relegated at the end of the season i.e. TSC + 1 ; TSC + 2 .

Two promoted teams will be added in the next season, therefore only one team should relegate together with Tripoli.

Good luck in shaping up, but don't expect anything for tomorrows game

Another question

According to various websites the rankings for the First Division show - Al Nejmeh ; Al Hikma; Tadanon Sour with a game in hand, I can understand two teams but not three.

Can you link me to a website with the correct rankings etc - goalzz.com also shows the above.

Everything is allright, these teams had two byes during the season because of the strange scheduling.

Today's games were postponed because of the terrible weather conditions.

Yesterday i was really proud of being lebanese, i got a world soccer magazine for the month of march and Lebanon's national team was there!!!!!!!!! yes it was, BUT we were shown and wrote about our fight that we had against thailand or something, WHAT A WAY TO REPRESENT OURSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats the only way we are publicized
