Team news ahead of the first match in Nehru Cup: • Lebanon had an hour’s training at the Janki Devi Memorial College. • The team focused more on team building and combination. • Training started with a running session for 10 minutes followed by another 15 minutes warm up with the ball. • Later they concentrated on short passing and shooting Mathc Preview: http://www.indianfootball.com/en/news/articleId/1474 It is interesting to see the questions fired at India coach Bob Houghton these days. When he took up the job three years ago, the questions were how far he thought India would progress in a particular tournament. But two title triumphs in two years and the Englishman has certainly turned a lot of skeptics over to his side. On the eve of the ONGC Nehru Cup India are certainly one of the favourites, whatever be their FIFA rankings. For this credit must go to ‘Bob the Builder’ who has successfully moulded a ragtag bunch of players into a dedicated group of India players, who seem determined and confident to give of their best. Now there’s talks of a hattrick of titles at Ambedkar Stadium and India certainly have the wherewithal to make it happen. They start their campaign this year against Lebanon, to whom they suffered their biggest defeat in the last two years – a 1-4 drubbing in a World Cup qualifier. But times have changed and the Lebanese coach admitted that India have improved a lot in this period. “We played India twice but they have improved a lot in these two years,” said coach Emile Rustom. If there’s anything worrying Houghton ahead of tomorrow’s match, then it is the physique of the Lebanese players. “Three of the four goals we conceded against Lebanon were from set pieces where height played an important factor,” said Houghton. When Houghton took charge, the average height was 172 centimetres which has improved to 178. They will be up against the tall Lebanese players and that will be an interesting test for India. But Nehru Cup is just a cog, albeit a vital one, in Houghton’s bigger plans – the 2011 Asian Cup. The tour of Barcelona was the first step in that direction. The month-long camp there, besides the 11 days spent in Dubai, has put the boys in high spirits. From skipper Bhaichung Bhutia to newcomer Subhas Singh, there’s a lot of confidence brimming over. Bhutia, despite his club related problems, is the undisputable leader and is still hungry for goals despite 16 years in the game. His partner upfront, Sunil Chetri, is struggling a bit with his ankle injury but is likely to play some part in the later stages of the Nehru Cup. As for the rest of the squad, barring minor injuries to Samir Naik, N Mohanraj and Rakesh Masih and fever -- as in Renedy Singh’s case – the rest are in fine fettle. Youngsters like Subhas, Jagpreet Singh, Govin Singh, Arindam Bhattacharya, Masih, Baldeep Singh, N Mohanraj won’t be a part of the Nehru Cup squad but will gain vital experience being part of the 20-member team and watching the competition unfold. Among the seniors Clifford Miranda finds left out. Lebanon, on their part are without four important players, two of whom are playing in Germany and one at East Bengal with the other one injured. Transfer related problems between Safa SC and East Bengal saw Ramiz Dayoub dropped for the tournament but the coach put on was game to brace face. With the Ambedkar Stadium getting decked up for the occasion – though concerns remain about the turf after the Independence Day celebrations carried out there – India versus Lebanon match promises to be a humdinger, one that could put the Nehru Cup back in the spotlight after the fiasco with the Palestinian team. And what if India fail to win the tournament. Then there’s always the next one to look forward to, for the Asian Cup is still 18 months away and that’s when we get a true measure of our potential. Till then let us sit back and enjoy the game.
