Two California JuCo kids have signed USL deals.

Amigry Pineda, who played last fall at Santiago Canyon JC, has signed with Orange County SC.

And Jonathan Hernandez signed with LA Galaxy 2 after one season at Mt. San Antonio JC.

Pineda was one of the top recruits for the class of 2015 and had originally committed to Cal State Fullerton. But he never matriculated and spent the 15/16 academic year with the Galaxy academy then went the JC route when no offer came.

I missed this one earlier this year.

Seattle University F David Olsen signed with the Sounders 2 of the USL in March and won't be back for his senior season. He had a fairly quiet season for Seattle U last fall (4 goals 4 assists) but as a sophomore in 2015 he had 16 goals and was an all-American so in the small world of college soccer, this is fairly impactful player.

So far this USL season he's played in 13 games and scored 2 goals.

Wow! This is shocking, since he did NOTHING for us while at Duke. The least he could have done was stay for his Sr year and had a great season, then gone pro, as clearly this offer would be on the table no matter when he decided to become a pro. (rolls eyes...)

Very fitting. In order for rebuilding for next WC, this forum will need to be chocked full of kids leaving college game and turning pro OR the college game will need to make sweeping changes to be better at development. Otherwise we can expect more of same next qualifying cycle.

Hopefully both can happen.... the best of the best leaving for the pros at 16 or going to Europe and college adopting a year round program with substitution limitations to aid those players who primary development happens 18-22.

To be fair, the next World Cup could be filled with kids that are in 7th-9th grade right now. College game may or may not be evolved in the next 5 years for that to make any sort of impact.

Is there any indication of progress on the college front?

It's been almost three years since the full-season proposal was first being floated publicly (at the 2015 NSCAA convention when Sunil met with D-I men's coaches) and there doesn't seem to be any progress other than hope.

Because after this week's fiasco, the pressure to keep the top players out of college soccer will only grow.

    No.

Sasho Cirovski is about the only one who's continuously talked about it. Outside of him, very quiet.

We won't see it, not anytime soon. Probably not within 5-10 years. There would have to be a MASSIVE overhaul of NCAA in order for it to happen.

What? Qualifying will likely start in March 2019. Doubtful we will be throwing a bunch of 15-17 year olds out there. In fact doubtful any kid in 7th grade right now will sniff the roster in 2024 - he'd be 17. Likelihood of even another Pulisic (19) are slim at best.

The names that will carry us forward next 5 years are Weston McKennie, Matt Miazga, Justen Glad, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Tyler Adams and Josh Sargent.

Even in the Swiss press they talk about it.
"US soccer model is in a dead end".
The article is broadly aligned with what you guys are saying.
The issue is that the NCAA model is built for pure American close leagues. While football is led by the European model (and at a lesser extent South America's one). So it cannot efficiently work for performances outside the US.
If I have time I will translate the article and will post it. In the meantime Google translate should give a good understanding.

I never said anything about the qualifying. I said the World Cup is in 5 years. Take a 7th-9th grader now (13-15 years old) and in 5 years that makes them 18-20. Hence, why I said the next World Cup could be filled (emphasis added this time, making sure it was understood that I didn't say "would") with players in from those current classes.

4-5 years ago, no one expected Pulisic. Why couldn't the same be possible? It definitely isn't if we don't start emphasizing age over these aging veterans. No one even knew Josh Sargent until the U20s. Hence, why I said really digging deep and emphasizing youth. But, I've said that for years that we've relied on the Old Guard for way too long, need to start getting new blood coming through.

When is a 7th grader 10 years old?!

"4-5 years ago, no one expected Pulisic.
" Not true. He was already turning heads internationally as 12-13 y.o. I literally have you tube videos of him sent to me by a relative who's son played with him back then showing him playing and juggling and what not. they were hype type videos. Some were of him training in europe during the summer. Us soccer has known about his elite ability for years. The miracle he has risen as high as fast was unpredictable. but the notion of his potential greatness was known. there are some other young kids like Ben Lederman who also everyone in soccer world has known about for years There is definitely some talent in pipeline - just not enough or that much better than what we have historically seen to raise the overall level of the Nats. we only seem to get one Landon Donovan or one Pulisic to come along every 10 yrs. we need 4-5 of those guys.

Well said Catfish, Pulisic has been a known quantity for a long time now. Anyone who watched him once he was in the U17 program and didn’t think he was the future of our US National team, doesn’t know what they we’re watching- plain and simple. You can argue that we’ve seen kids not pan out and the hype didn’t materialized....but Pulisic was never someone in that category. He has been on another level as long as he’s been playing at an international level.

No one expected Pulisic for the USMNT. No one expected him to be doing what he's been at Dortmund. Spin it all you want, this massive rise for him was unexpected.

But, thank you for cherrypicking one statement out of the post to help prove my point. He was seen at 12ish years old. That's exactly what I stated from the beginning that you wanted to argue. We can continue to find these players, and it can start now.

Just maybe not the 10 year old 7th grader you talked about.
