Sunderland are really working the left wing now that Donovan is out. Everton cant seem to break anything up over there, and cant get the ball out.
None that I heard and the announcers focused on Artetas entry, nothing mentioned. 86 Sunderland with 2 corners and a cross and the ball hits the ground all 3 times in front of the goal. Timmeh brings down a hopeful cross at 87
Timmy Howard with a goalkeeper's dream save! He stopped a screamer of a volley with one hand out of the near-post upper 90! This after moving laterally on a cross. Great stuff. Play of the game.
Arteta not as effective defensively. Fair bit of action down Everton's right flank now, especially via Zenden.
88 Tim Howard with Save #2 on a wicked shot to the near post after 2 impressive flick-ons from Sunderlands K. Jones....maybe those Concacaf dudes are better than rumoured...
I Like the LD substitutions so far. Moyes doesn't push him. So far it hasn't cost them except maybe against Arsenal. He is really handling Landons playtime with wise caution. I guess it makes me think that they're gonna pick up that option whatever it may be. Grant Wahl please pick up the white courtesy phone...Grant Wahl...
90th Arteta gets crunched on a 50-50 ball, is OK though 91 Pienaar off Anichebe On 92 HOWARD with a huge SAVE on a k. Jones header great header Great save
2 nice saves for Timmy in the closing minutes, one on Zenden, and then an even better one on Jones. Well done, Everton! 2-0.
It wasnt Arteta that was responsible for the flank, it became Osman's responsibility. Arteta became a more central player. Osman didnt have a good match in many respects. That side opened up when LD went out. I think that teams leave their left backs at home more when LD is in the game to prevent an explosion up that side of the field.
50th EPL clean sheet for Tim Howard not a bad thing on a soccer resume and LD gets his first goal! BTW the Donovan Goal was absolutely slotted under the GK right arm, he meant to put it where he put it...to the near post under the GK's reach. Clearly he did not shoot for the far post (as he was crossing from right to left in front of the goal mouth, LD brought down a flick, went around a defender with 2 touches and slotted it under the GK nicked it but it went through. It was a great goal and my some-what biased opinion better than Cahills as Cahills was made by Fellini's cross, Cahill merely flicked his head backwards and he got lucky...
The first was better. At least from my perspective as a keeper, it was more difficult. Reason being, its hard to move between posts like that and still be able to have your feet square enough to react, much less to react with the type of explosion that Howard is able to get off of the ground with....and he knocked a screamer out of the upper 90 with one hand to boot. Those are the types of saves you make in practice and think, "man...I got that one". Good stuff.
i agree (Fellaini = world class). i guess what i'm trying to say is that Donovan provides an element that Everton so clearly need. kind of in the way Reyna provided an element to those teams that they so obviously and desperately needed. Although they are different elements. Donovan really just slots in perfectly for this team. I can't believe how perfect the fit is. his pace, unselfishness, willingness to play one-touch football (and make it a good touch) and his corners ... not to mention his good passing. it all really enhances Everton's play. oh ... and not to mention his unrelenting effort on defense. that'll get you in to a Moyes XI allright.
