3PM EST WEDNESDAY 1/27 -- Tape Delayed on Setanta TV and SetantaI at 6:45pm EST

Nice little midweek fixture for Landon to break out and score a brace for his new squad. Sunderland has given up an average of 2.27 goals per away match and have been really slumping of late including, most notably, giving up 7 goals to Chelsea last week.

According to Sky Sports Landon has drawn "rave reviews" for his time thusfar with Everton (it would seem they are not reading this forum). http://premiersoccerstats.com/indexa.cfm
    Can't wait for this one!

"Philippe Senderos goes straight into the Everton squad to face Sunderland at Goodison on Wednesday evening."

"However Mikel Arteta is rated as 50/50 for the mid-week Premier League match."

Everton: Howard, Nash, Neville, Coleman, Heitinga, Senderos, Distin, Baines, Fellaini, Osman, Arteta, Pienaar, Bilyaletdinov, Donovan, Cahill, Saha, Vaughan, Duffy, Baxter, Forshaw, Agard.

    http://www.evertonfc.com/news/archive/senderos-in-squad.html

I think most Everton fans are expecting the same 4-4-1-1 that started on Saturday for tomorrow, except with Osman in for Bilyaletdinov and maybe Senderos instead of Distin.

    ---------Saha----Cahill----------

    Pienaar--Osman--Fellaini--Donovan

    Baines---Heitinga---Distin---Neville

    -------------Howard-------------

I'd really like to see Donovan play on the left... he might have better chemistry with Baines (who has consistently supplied the long diagonals that LD has latched onto anyway).

If Landon starts again, clearly Moyes likes what he see's. Expect a closer working relationship between Donovan and Neville, they are pro's. Everton cannot be so predictable on attack. 90% or more of attacks coming from the left side will not work in the EPL. Balance is required.

I think when Arteta is healthy he will connect dynamically with Donovan. The timing is perfect really. About the time Donovan is settling in, Arteta will be fit for a full 90. Lets just hope Landon remains favored and gets the time with Arteta.

So I am assuming we will need the DeLorean to watch this one, assuming we can get LD to sign for Everton instead of Bayern Munich... ;)

This is what SkySports thinks will happen as well.

a bit off topic, but does Baines have a shot at the World Cup? He's shown tremendous improvement this year IMO. I wish he were American.

He should do, but Capello seems to prefer Cole (understandable), Bridge :)confused:) and Warnock (don't see him as better than Baines myself) ahead of him.

Lescott, Barry and Milner can also play there, so I say no. Sad really as he had an excellent 2009.

Yes but so has Pienaar, and Pienaar has been key for them thus far. I think Donovan remains Moyes's first choice on the right yet again, though.

That the USA is prohibited from having a decent LB is a little-known concession from the Treaty of Versailles.

I think Bornstein will be a very pleasant surprise at WC 2010. He is really growing in confidence.

Per a poster on an Everton forum:

    Starting Line-Up v Sunderland

    Howard

    Neville --- Distin --- Heitinga --- Baines

    Donovan -- Osman -- Fellaini -- Pienaar

    Cahill

    Saha

Substitutes: Nash, Senderos, Arteta, Bilyaletdinov, Anichebe, Duffy.

    No Vaughn, which is surprising.

Vaughan is the 7th man on the bench according to the lineups released by the Sunderland website. Donovan gets the start again. Here's Sunderland's lineup:

Sunderland: Gordon, Nosworthy, McCartney, Mensah, Kilgallon, Zenden, Henderson, Cana (C), Cattermole, Richardson, Bent.
Subs: Fulop, Da Silva, Reid, Jones, Campbell, Malbranque, Meyler.

ESPNSoccernet Gamecast lists Donovan as RCF up top with SAHA and Cahill playing RCM. Weird.

    Edit: and Osman playing RM.

Soccernet usually just guesses the formation before the match begins. Afterward, they'll sometimes adjust to reflect the way it actually played out.

Landon himself has asserted his best position is as a central attacking midfielder in behind two forwards. There he has more options at which to pass along the ground (which is his first instinct), can be less predictable off the dribble, and has more of a target at which to shoot (which helps him because he more likes to place shots than hammer them). You saw how much of a difference playing inside can make for him in the MLS Cup. He started making an impact immediately subsequent to the switch. Previously he was rather average. Landon's versatility works to his disadvantage if anything, like Spector. But it will be nice to at least see him in a role where he has enjoyed success recently as a national teamer.
