Per SI. He won't be a part of the summer friendlies/World Cup qualifiers. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/news/20130514/landon-donovan-not-in-usmnt-roster-klinsmann
If I'm Landon Donovan, I retire until Klinsmann is out. No way in hell would I participate in the Gold Cup with a bunch of fringe players.
I'm sure this is going to end up as a 44 page thread with someone (probably HHF) playing devil's advocate about how this is the right decision. But until there's a roster released I'm calling lies. I just cannot see JK already making that decision 3 weeks prior to the first game.
He deserves it? Being left out? Or he doesn't deserve a call up? Splitting hairs maybe, but significant to me. If Klinsmann thinks he does not deserves a call up based on his play, that's one thing. But I hope -- and do actually believe -- that the manager of our national team is not basing decisions on who deserves to be left out.
I'm with you. The pre-roster release information last time was all f'ed up until just before the release. Plus there are bound to be injuries that effect the list of available players, so no way of knowing who's in and who's out until the list is official.
He doesn't deserve a call up to be honest, he really hasn't done much since he came back from his sabbatical, and even when his opportunities arose, he seemed to forget what to do.
Insanity!! I have a hard time believing that he isn't one of the top 23 US players even now after some time off. JK is crazy!
If that ends up being the thought process, then that's fine, but it's a bit early to make that decision, I think.
If true, I feel this will be a mistake by JK. Donovan, even at less than peak form, offers something valuable that the US team currently lacks -- a set-up player who can create chances. How strongly I feel about how bad of a mistake this would be depends on which flank/wing midfielders get selected over Donovan. The Gold Cup would then be a VERY interesting issue. Donovan really would have to accept if JK offers a Gold Cup spot, or take the risk of permamently poisoning their professional relationship and any future chances for a callup. But Donovan plus a ton of fringe Nat's prospects at the Gold Cup sure would be a put down. Yet he really cannot decline if called. I do hope this report turns out to be wrong. As others have noted, there have been many wrong reports about prior rosters.
I'm a huge LD supporter, both club and country, and I think that's factually true -- pearl clutching optional. But the history of successful international football programs is littered with great players who were left out of their national team for an infinite number of reasons. If there's one thing JK has, I think, it's a holistic, comprehensive approach and philosophy to the national side -- trying to build a team that works together as a unit. Now please know that I don't think he's achieved that in the least. I think we kinda suck right now, and I honestly can't recall being less enthused about our national team prospects since the pre-Sampson era, the Sampson era, and the immediately post-Sampson era. And I also think the US pool simply doesn't have the luxury of talent to leave out a player of LD's quality for the sake of an ideological pursuit. Yet with all that said, I can at least understand JK's decision if he in fact goes that way. I hope the news is wrong; but I think it's probably true.
I know I'm gonna sound like a moron, with the answer being an obvious head-slapper -- but, honest question: Has he blown these scoops before?
Also, Also: Let's assume JK would have reached out to Donovan before any decision was made public / leaked. (please)
The fact the decision has been made 2 weeks before the first friendly, tells me this doesn't have much, if anything, to do with Landon's on-field performance.
I enjoy it when news leaks of who isn't on a roster. Have we gotten confirmation that Adu and Rogers are also not invited to the next camp? Only potential injuries to others will (or just might) get him to the next camp? So, he'll be there.
