The guys who did the worst in my opinion were the Univision English Language pbp and color commentators with the pbp guy being significantly worse. FWIW, I have a whole host of guys who I like less than Cobi as color commentators. I thought the guy (Holden?) on the PSG v RM champion league match yesterday was worse. Cobi at least will say he was wrong when watching a replay. Holden just speaks over his mistake as if if reaffirming it will make the viewer ignore what that replay shows
Sorry, they probably didn't hire him. I was just thinking of back when he and Bretos were paired up. I, too, thought his terms and phrasings were "interesting".
I think that was Ramses Sandoval. Although Christian Miles did some of those broadcasts too, I think. And you are right - bottom of the barrel on PBP. Don't recall who the color commentator was.
Didn't we have Max Bretos and Mark Rogandino one year? My recollection is they were my favorite, but my memory...
@GalaxyPodcast reports the Galaxy will have approximately 7,500 season ticket members this season. That number is down from a year ago but by how much is uncertain. Sports Illustrated claimed the #LAGalaxy sold 11,400 season tix in 2017, which would put the drop at nearly 4,000.— Kevin Baxter 🇺🇦🏳️🌈 (@kbaxter11) February 16, 2018
Yes the worst PBP guy is Ramses, no doubt. I have to mute the telecast just to watch the game. Of course the Dog Crap United's, Dave Johnson's goal call is terrible too " it's in the net, it's in the back of the net". Stuart Holden is the most annoying Color Analyst, he thinks he is so knowledgeable, because he sat on the bench watching EPL games. Too bad De Jong didn't kick him in the mouth
Watson is now an all purpose guy for the Pac12 Network. I have honestly found Watson to be a somewhat competent announcer for Women's gymnastics. His soccer pbp is a lot better than it used to be but is still way behind the major television pbp guys.
Sandoval is the absolute worst, followed closely by the Gus Johnson experiment that FOX tried a few years ago.
I don’t pay much attention to the announcers/commentators. I watch the game and trust my eyes. A 4,000 drop in STH numbers isn’t good. Spray paint wars are dumb. Go Galaxy!
Have disagree. I enjoyed Gus’s honest attempt to do soccer. Did his best with a tough task. Worst is Christian Miles. Cobi belongs on some “worst” lists as well to be completely honest.
I don’t think soccer commentary in the US hasn’t progressed at the same rate as the game or its popularity. JP Dellacamara is for me the gold standard for American soccer broadcasters, he’s totally comfortable on the mic, isn’t trying to copy anyone else, isn’t reliant on schtick; he’s charismatic without being a cartoon character. I can’t think of a non-immigrant commentator other than JP who I actively look forward to calling a game. There’s also very little rapport between commentators and the best is usually when someone like Twellman is paired off with Ian Darke who does a lot of the heavy lifting. Post game and halftime analysis has come a long way, but actual commentary has a long way to go.
You might be right, but in fairness to Paul he hasn't done much of it and was learning on the job. He was pretty bad. But Cobi is Cobi and never seems to get any better. At this point he should be an experienced professional. Tough choice between them
It all depends upon the broadcast. Spectrum Sports post and half time shows are little more than puff pieces and suck. To me, while its not soccer, the Lakers half and post game shows with James Worthy are great. James might not say everything, but his facial expressions let you know where things really stand. I am not that impressed with the half time shows for the USMNT.
Didn't the USA Goats use to do open tryouts for their first team annually? I seem to remember at least 1 guy making the squad.
I believe he used to be the primary color guy for ESPN right? I think he got fired for attacking verbally fellow ESPN (at the time) personality Jim Rome in some drunken interview he did.
Do you get bonus points for including the tilde on the n? I used to know how to do this in MS-Word, but not in web postings.
Yep. He beats out 2,000 other competitors on a televised reality show to get an MLS contract, goes on to appear in 130+ games with Chivas and Portland and now plays in Liga MX. Oh, and 15 appearances so far for the USMNT. Amazing success story.
And a major indictment of how much good talent the US soccer program doesn't find or doesn't care to look for...
