I think we have to remember these are average ratings and it's not quite the same as asking the publication who they think are the best star players at that time. That said, obviously great attacking players can achieve consistently high ratings/good averages; sometimes they can have a big impact without doing so though.

Actually Butragueno not being in the top 50 is perhaps even more surprising than Lineker's rating judging by his reputation and form at that time and the Ballon D'or results for '86 and '87. International games (such as Lineker's hat-trick vs Spain) or games in Europe (could be positive for Butragueno) wouldn't count towards these ratings though of course.

I believed Lineker was used as a wideforward position in liga for most games and of course it was not his forte' ... which is goal poacher inbox striker

I am refer to this rating and if its processing is reliable, the result imply Lineker was by far not in his top form.

I C ... most the times, these ratings are more like indication (for me) rather than accurately rating in number per se ... I meant it was not neccessary the ones with higher rates would (or were) best players in those seasons, but rather they had a great season (by their book)

Like you said ... the rating "indicated" lIneker have not had a very good years in Liga ...

I think he began to play as a wide forward when Cruyff became manager but in 86/87 he was playing as a striker including scoring a hat-trick vs Real Madrid I believe.

Considering most used players for the 86/87 season (when Venables was Barca's DT)

    The usual formation was:

    -------------Zubizarreta
    Gerardo---Migueli---Moratalla---Julio Alberto
    -----Victor-----Roberto-----Caldere
    --Lineker--------Hughes---------Carrasco

    Or if it was 4-4-2:
Carrasco & Caldere being side mids and britains as a twin strikers.

Yeah the 4 3 3 was Cruyff favorite formation. But agree with you (and Puck) that some games they played as 4 4 2 (diamond I think) with Lineker as striker. Still, most games were in 4 3 3

    Don Balon Ranking: Season 1987-88

Since season 1987-88 the championship was played with 20 teams in a home-away matches, making a total of 38 rounds.

Also, in some years due to inclusion of some players with few matches (21-23) in the top-50, i include other names with lower ranking but more games played.

Lineker is out of top 50. This season must be rated below international-class. I ever doubt for a long time about Magico Gonzalez that some raised his name in very high place but this has proved something that he could not take extraordinary performance in the league despite level of candidates were by far inferor to Italian Series A .

Magico Gonzalez is the same case as "genius players".
One match he was outstanding and other three he disappeared.
You know what i mean, most attacking players are/were irregular, in contrast defenders & keepers are/were more regular.

    For example:
    - FW was rated in a month: 5-5-5-9 = 6 average
    - DF was rated in a month: 5-6-6-7 = 6 average

This happens in most cases. So, in equally or close ratings between 2 players, i prefer the more "genius" player or whom have the major square deviation (statistically speaking). Also considering a statistical error of 5-10%

To rate legends, consistency international-class is a must. So, if attacker rating week-by-week is way 6-6-6-8, it is acceptable but 5 point is too out of standard. Defensive players are always rated lower than attacker so I have set this criteria.

    Coefficient Of Role Potential

In all-time greatest footballers ever list, it includes all positions and it is inevitable to compare players in different role. Accordingly, setting of role importance combined with degree of difficulty of playing in each role is a key to establish the ranking properly.

    Goalkeeper : 1.1
    Basic Defender : 1.0
    Wing-Back : 1.2
    Classic Libero : 1.4
    Destroyer : 1.0
    Central Midfielder : 1.4
    Offensive Lateral : 1.4
    Offensive Midfielder : 1.6
    Forward : 1.6
    Finisher : 1.5

So according to you, how many seasons must a player be rated high for him to be ranked high on your list? I ask this, because we have cases where we only know the ratings of some of these players in no more than 3 or 4 seasons, but then we are missing the rest of their information of an entire career.

Yes, some players especially in the pre-war era are hard to rate. In this case, the best way I can do for now is to consider stats of goals in overall career for forwards. If they were midfielder and defender, it has to be depended on historical regard in article and successful trophies will be supported their great years in assumption as the best way I can do. Anyway, it must be not much reliable.

    Season 1988-89

Since this season: 1988-89, the scale points to rating players change to 1-10. With 1 as the worst performance and 10 as the best, so the rate for each player in every match were 1, 2, 3, ....... 9, 10.

Like the last season, the championship was played by 20 clubs, making a 38 rounds for a League season.
