Seriously, didn't you guys get the memo? We are supposed to be complaining about pay-to-play, the apathetic d velopment of American players, and no promotion and relegation. Or was that last week?
Kyle Martino is running for USSF president and some of the things he wants implemented are subsidizing youth soccer costs, regional training centers, major investment in NWSL, and a futsal court at every school. Seems to know what this country needs probably because he actually became a professional player in the country and experienced what it took to go pro.
It's a good start. It won't change overnight, but Gulati's lack of action at times cost us. Jurgen should have been fired after the gold cup failure in 2015, but was kept on. Our team was already showing signs of decay under Jurgen then. Bradley was fired for losing in the final of the gold cup to mexico which was strange. We were angry we lost, but Bradley achieved what was required of him there. Makes the non-firing of Jurgen's 2015 gold cup failure even weirder. Anyway, this is what we needed. Hopefully we sort out the new USSF president soon. After the world cup there will be a lot of managers to go for, and we will need a strong president for that.
I absolutely agree with most of this. BUT I will be surprised if things change very much no matter who gets elected. And I expect the winner will be an insider part of the old boys network,
I really hope whoever comes in can make some changes. We are one of the best nations in North America. We should be comfortably qualifying for the world cup each time. Also want to point out Sunil did a lot of good for this country, but he overstayed his welcome. When he took over, soccer was still a very underdeveloped sport here. The sport has grown so much in his tenure, and seems to be doing well. Getting Jurgen as our manager was a pretty big deal at the time, and helped shape grow the sport. We have a lot of players in the system now because Jurgen encouraged a lot of players to go to europe, and he was able to get players with dual citzenships on board. I hope whoever comes in next can make a strong managerial appointment, and continue to invest in soccer in the country.
I think this greatly exaggerates what JK actually accomplished. Take a look at the 2010 WC roster. All but a few of the players played for European sides. I think the exceptions were Donovan, Buddle and Finley. Bradley also brought Jermaine Jones in but he was injured at the time.
No no no.. Hope Solo is going to win it. I'm sure. https://deadspin.com/hope-solo-is-running-for-president-of-u-s-soccer-1821109426
Has Grant Wahl put his name forward? Or does he only do that when it's a cheesy token gesture that has no realistic chance of success?
Zardes called in to Jan Camp in prep for face off against Bosnia/Herz friendly @ Stub Hub (could he face Baggio?). Anyone going to this match? Will be interesting to see what the MLS-only squad can do. U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION (Club; Caps/Goals) GOALKEEPERS (4): Alex Bono (Toronto FC/CAN; 0/0), Bill Hamid (Midtjylland/DEN; 4/0), Cody Cropper (New England Revolution; 0/0), Zack Steffen (Columbus Crew SC; 0/0) DEFENDERS (9): Danny Acosta (Real Salt Lake; 0/0), Justen Glad (Real Salt Lake; 0/0), Nick Lima (San Jose Earthquakes; 0/0), Justin Morrow (Toronto FC/CAN; 3/0), Ike Opara (Sporting Kansas City; 0/0), Tim Parker (Vancouver Whitecaps FC/CAN; 0/0), Matt Polster (Chicago Fire; 0/0), Brandon Vincent (Chicago Fire; 1/0), Walker Zimmerman (Los Angeles Football Club; 1/0) MIDFIELDERS (11): Tyler Adams (New York Red Bulls; 1/0), Paul Arriola (D.C. Sapong (Philadelphia Union; 3/0)
Even though this is camp cupcake, I gotta say a lot of those selections are super underwhelming. Most are average to above average MLSers. Defense is really poor. Midfield depth looks shaky. Forwards are the only somewhat ok option. I like Sapong and I think Morris works well with international soccer.
That's because we don't have a lot of Americans, particularly young Americans, getting regular minutes MLS.
But that could be that right now there are not a lot of young Americans that merit regular minutes in MLS. A real chicken and egg problem.
I laugh at Gyasi's continued ability to lift a middle finger to his critics. Another call up - good news for us if he ends up sticking around. He will at least be in shape.
I'm actually excited to see a lot of these guys. Good opportunity for some fringe guys to make a case and become leaders in the next gen of Nats. It'll be interesting to see who stands out.
Anyone going or watching the match tonight? I completely forgot we even had a national team game tonight. US missing the world cup has really made the national team disappear lately.
I debated about going, but I’m gonna watch at home. I’m curious to see Rowe, Roldan, Parker, Opara, and Ramirez. Also, curious to see if Arriola can be a leader for this group. USA!
Going to watch as well. And reminded that I need to make a new thread. @TrickHog, can you lock this one?
