I posted this in "technology" but thought someone here might have some information I just got a Kindle as a gift. Any one have any advice? Sources of (free) material?
This site has some books in txt format. They have to be in txt, doc, or html. pdfs won't work. I don't know why.. You can email them to your kindle. There are instructions on the "manage my kindle" page. http://www.dwalin.ru/books/

gutenberg is very good, i even download a lot of books i already have on paper to be able to ctrl+f the contents... much less temps perdu than leafing through all 12 volumes a la recherche. actually i'm resurrecting this old thread to get advice : i'm not interested in a reader for myself but looking on amazon to get a book for my son i saw that even used i was going to pay at least 10E... and there was a kindle version for free. and it dawned on me that all the public domain books i've got for him since christmas would have already paid for a kindle. and moving around as he does it would probably make a lot of sense for him... my first question, whether it could support formats available at gutenberg and other such sites, seems answered. the second would be : can you can annotate books on kindle? and finally, are you kindle owners out there satisfied? are there other platforms that may be better? thanks for any advice you can give.
1) I don't know 2) sort of. It's not easy to get access to, so far as I can tell. 3) I have about 125 free books on my kindle. My preferred platform remains print.
But eInk doesn't smudge. I find that I'm actually reading a helluva lot more thanks to my Paperwhite.
and no more papercuts! good luck hiding a betty&veronica double digest behind war & peace on a kindle during class, though. and they don't press flowers for shit.
Gutenberg is what I've used a lot as well. I've torrented some books as well, but authors are making less and less money lately so I feel guilty when I do ("stealing" from rap artists, however, I have no issues with). Kindle has tons of public access books. You can get classics from all over the world. Since I'm living in Russia currently I was looking up some Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy titles, and I got tons of free results for both.
Thanks EDIT: When I first read that I thought you meant my post was BS, I was like wow these people are rude
if the book is on gutenberg it's in the public domain and as such the author makes no money on it even if he's alive. as we say in french, leurs dents ne leur font plus mal. since i make a general habit of reading only those who have been dead for at least 50 years gutenberg and its ilk are my great friends. even for books i read on paper the digital versions are invaluable for searching. a french version called gallica is put together by the Bibliothèque Nationale Française has a lot of scans of old books and manuscripts... not kindle-friendly i suppose but fascinating nevertheless. and brings the argument full circle. which is more "authentic" : reading a recent edition of montaigne translated into modern french on paper, or this?

No one has suggested "the library" as a source for free eBooks yet? Most public library systems have a good selection of eBooks for loan unless you live out in the middle of nowhere.
how do they work out a loan of an eBook? well, my hometown in CA briefly shut theirs down a few years ago. it caused a big stir and there are still lots of people upset about it on both sides. btw, i just checked out our local library and they've got a big e-section. http://numelyo.bm-lyon.fr/
Typically through a third party app. My local library uses one called Overdrive. You enter your library card number into the app and that allows you to peruse your library's eBook catalog. You can return the item early, but if you forget the item deletes itself after three weeks. No late fees, no forgetting to return an item, etc. You can get them in both Kindle and ePub formats (one of the formats that works on iPad, Nook, Android tablets, etc.) I'm lucky to have a pretty good library system where I live I suppose.
I'm really sorry to hear that. Libraries are really great resources that provide MUCH more than books.
You were right first time.... Got an excellent library on our island, with an on line request system that will order most anything and free.
